Carouse

Drunken revelry gives way to misleading signals;
A girl follows a man in from the dark. Artificial lights twinkle inside
Her head. Long, long cigarette holders puncture the airy level
Above the heads of the guests. The crowd laughs fully. The sound is like a ripe,
Round peach being cut in half.

An alcoholic punch is handed out. The voices become louder,
More insistent. Pink and red emphasise the party, candles are knocked
Over and the hot light spills through the windows and to a
Little, rumpled place in the grass where a man is stretched out completely.
Eyes rolling in their sockets. The clash of glass like a minuscule
Car crash. A man’s eyes shining bright and brown like brass.

A champagne glass.
