The Funeral

The town buried her

standing up

surrounded by flowers

dying with their last breath.

The bells rang clear

calling the funeral to order.

The coffin stood upright

at the center of town.

She looked asleep.

Her hair

stiff blonde halo

wrapped tight.

Her eyes a vacant blue,

expressionless in death

as her dress buttoned to the neck,

threatened to unsex her.

Her boots

buffed and polished

curled at the toes

heels pointed straight down.

Prayers were whispered

undetectable by human ears.

The bells tolled

concluding the service.

She was buried

lying down

toes pointed up.
