Playing the Game

CHAPTER ONE
Her long brown hair cascaded down her back as she walked over to five girls. It was mid-September; the twenty-second to be exact. She adjusted her large purple bag as she crossed the street to the school.
“Angel!” one girl said
Elizabeth “Angel” or “Beth” Anderson was popular. Not only because she was the center striker and the best and the captain of their school's Girls' Varsity Soccer team when she was only a Junior. But also because of her kindness and her smarts. Every girl wanted to either be her, or be her friend. Every guy wanted her to be their girlfriend. But she always said no. She had no interest in guys really, she cared more about her grades, flute, singing and soccer more then anything. That was what she lived for- playing her flute, singing, and soccer. It was what made her who she was.
“Hey you guys.” she said smiling
The five girls standing around her were her best friends. Tricia “Trish” White was her second longest friend. They had known each other most of their lives. She had long blonde hair and blue eyes. She sang in the school's Chorus and was a defender in soccer. Kelsey “Kels” Greenan had shoulder length brown hair and brown eyes. She was a mid-fielder in soccer and played Baritone for the school's Band. Brittany “Britt” or “Britty” Stark had long blight brown hair and brown eyes. She was also a defender and played the flute. Jackalyn “Jackie” Rouse had long black hair and brown eyes. She sang in the Chorus and was goalie. Now, Lily Osborn had long blonde hair and hazel eyes. She was Elizabeth's longest friendship and many wondered if they were twins separated at birth. Lily did the same as Elizabeth- sang, played the flute, and was a striker.
They, combined, were the most popular girls in their school- Bonita High School. Their school was centered around sports. The main sport- soccer. The area around the soccer field was usually filled with people- mainly students from the school.
But they were only part of the most popular group of the school. The other group was a group of six boys. All of them played soccer as well.
James Rainsford was the most popular of the boys. He had short black hair and brown eyes. He was center striker, captain of the Varsity Boys' Soccer team, sang in the Chorus, and played the saxophone. Nearly every girl wanted to throw themselves at him.
Josh Cunningham was James' longest best friend. He was another striker, sang, and played the trumpet. He had blonde hair and blue eyes. Next was Mark O'Dell. Short, brown hair and hazel eyes. He played mid-field. Adam Bliss was a defender and had short brown hair and brown eyes. He was goalie. Nick Blake played defense and had short dirty blonde hair and brown eyes.
There was a large rivalry between the two groups, but it mainly centered around James and Elizabeth.
“Man, today's gonna be hell. We have a U.S. History test today.” Lily said
“Yeah, I know. I was up until like midnight last night studying.” Elizabeth said sighing
“Angel, I don't see why you stress about it. You have, like, a ninety-seven average!” Jackalyn said
“No, its only a ninety-four!” Elizabeth said
“Oh wow! I would kill to have that high of an average!” Tricia said
“What? A seventy?” Adam said, walking over with the other boys
“No, but I'm sure you would Adam.” Elizabeth said smirking
“Is that your best comeback little Angel?” James asked
“If I were you, I wouldn't be talking about being little. And I don't hear any comebacks from you.” Elizabeth said
“And of course you would know about me being little.” James said
“You wish! But I could probably get ten girls at least that know if you are or aren't.” Elizabeth said
“Come on, can't you two wait until first period?” Josh said sighing
“Whatever. What are you doing here anyways?” Elizabeth asked sighing
“What, we can't just walk over and talk to you all?” Nick said
“No.” Lily said
“Whatever.” Mark said
“See ya ladies later.” James said, and left
“Sometimes I really want to hurt James.” Elizabeth said, shaking her head
“I don't see your problem with him Angel. He is HOT!” Kelsey said
“Lets just go inside.” Elizabeth said sighing
--
Elizabeth kicked her locker angrily.
“Gees Angel, what did the locker ever do to you?” James said, appearing beside her
“Oh shut up James. I really don't feel like dealing with you.” she said sighing
“Bad day?” he asked, leaning against a locker
“That would be an understatement.” she said, twirling her locker combination
“What happened?” James asked
Elizabeth raised an eyebrow at him. “Why should you care?” she asked
“What? I can't be nice?” James asked
“I didn't know you knew how to be nice.” she said
“Whatever. But ever thought I actually am concerned Angel?” he said, and walked away
“Sometimes I don't get him.” she said, shaking her head as she grabbed a binder
“Who?” Lily asked appearing
“James. He actually seemed concerned when I kicked my locker and said I was having a really bad day.” Elizabeth answered, and shut her locker
“That's interesting. Maybe he actually likes you.” Lily said
“Ha! Somehow I highly doubt that.” she said laughing
“Why though? You never know Angel.” Lily said
“Whatever. Lets just go to lunch. I'm really hungry.” Elizabeth said, shaking her head
“Right.” Lily said, and they went to the cafeteria
“We've got a game tomorrow.” Jackalyn said as Elizabeth and Lily sat down
“Yeah and we'll kick Canton's ass!” Elizabeth cheered
“Hell yeah!” Lily said happily
“Angel,” James said, walking over
“What?” she asked, taking a bite of her chicken finger
“Council meeting today after school.” James said
“Alright.” she said sighing as he left
“That means you'll be late for practice!” Tricia said
“Yeah, so I have to hurry so I can find coach.” Elizabeth said
“You sure you aren't taking on too much Angel?” Kelsey asked
“Yeah, its no big deal.” she said
“So what's happened to everyone today?” Brittany asked
“Nothing.” everyone but Elizabeth replied
“I really don't want to talk about it.” Elizabeth said
“Bad day?” Lily asked
“That's an understatement.” she answered sighing, “I really don't want to talk about it though.”
“You sure?” Tricia asked
“Yeah. I'll see ya guys later. I've gotta go and find coach.” Elizabeth said standing
Lily looked at James, who sat at a nearby table, out of the corner of her eye. He was looking at Elizabeth as she left.
“He likes you and you're so involved with everything else you're missing it Angel.” she whispered
