A/N: Another fairy tale I'm sure you'll enjoy.
-Fairy Princess-
She hadn't slept well, all night the storm rolled on leaving her terrified and unrestful. Watching the ceiling as random dislpays of light danced across it. Clutching her covers closely to her chest, Belle strived for some shred of peace.
By now she'd lost track of how long the angry clouds had been winding. Not knowing how long she lay in wait. As she slowly drifted towards exhaustion there was a knock against the window.
Was someone trying to get inside?
A fresh wave of fear rolled over her as she peeped from beneith the heavy blanket. There was another flash of lightning and panicked gripped her. Someone was out there. In the light of the clashing thunderbolts a figure was against the window, peering in at her.
Her eyes grey wide with shock, for the stranger was the size of her hand! As the thing continued to beat upon the window she she covered her face. Another bolt of light chased the shadows away to reveal nothing at the window. Only the rain and darkling clouds.
She was shaken from the event and it took her even loner to fall asleep. But her tiredness lulled her into a dream... or a distant memory of long ago. In it she lay ontop her covers playing with her dolls and asking if they'd like a spot of tea.
"One lump or two Mrs. Pettywither?"
Yes, yes I should have known. She replied to herself dropping three sugar cubes in the ivory tea cup.
"All that sugar will go to your hips if you keep this up silly rabbit!"
The black eyes void of life stared emptily as she gently lifted her up to hug her tightly against her breast. A noise interupted the child's playful demenore producing a small frown.
"Whos there? You know you should ask before entering someone elses room, its rude.
The room did not reply and she crossed her arms expectantly.
Yes I know your there, come out before I have to go looking for you - unless your playing games. That changes things!
Smiling once again the little girl carefully slid off the large bed while caring her little rabbit the whole while. Glancing under the bed nothing but dust bunnies and coins rested there. Enjoying the challenge presented to herself she tiptoed in front of the large wooden wardrobe by the vanity mirror, the last place one could hide in the room.
Making a shhing motion to her hands towards Mrs. Pettywither, they crept up slowly until her small hand reached up and grasped the brass handle. With as much strength as she could muster in her frail limbs she flung open the door and shouted triumphently.
I got you!
But all she could see were fur coats and a slight mothball smell. Surely the stranger was in there! It just wasn't possible that he couldn't be. She began to doubt herself and if she really had heard a small noice.
Mrs. Pettywither encouraged her though, and insisted she at least look behind the large coats. Oh, very smart indeed Mrs. Pettywither!
Climbing into the dark closet she faught momentarliy with the massive coats barricading her way in. But she had ways. Skillfully she slipped underneth a large grey and red fox coat, crawling to the back. Her hands finally reached the end of the wardrobe and she went from one end to to other. Surely someone was in here!
There came a sudden creaking sound as the hinges to the only way out started to close behind her. Whirling around and instantly distressed she pushed her way through the furry walls.
"Wait please, I'm in her-"
But she was sealed in the darkness before word of her protest could properly be heard. "You let me out! I'm afraid of the dark, oh please!!
Pounding against the wood she yelped as small s splinters lodged themselves inside her tender flesh. There was a clicking noise and she tumbled out of the moth ball prison onto the cold marble floor. No one was in sight. Her breathing was hiccuped as she whiped the tears from her face with the back of her uninjured hand.
"You don't play very nice, when I find you I'll teach you some manners!"
Standing as tall as she could her rosy cheeks burned with determination and her eyes flashed across the room. She was positive she'd checked everywhere and she wasn't buying in to the fact the door may have closed on its own accord. She knew better, the only place she had not looked now was inside her doll house.
She hadn't thought to look there first because it didn't seem a smart place to hide. Now looking at the 'doll house', which was actually about the same height as she was, she realized someone could hide themselves inside it. But they had to small like her of course. It was possible to sit in such a way.
"You won't escape me this time you fein." Smiling cruely she crept up as silently as a cat to the side of the pink structure. Not only was it massive in size but it was also extremely detailed, down to the wallpapered walls to the bricked chimney tops. Peering around the corner about to punish her tormentor with a proper tongue lashing. Her voice caught in her throat at what she found.
At first she was puzzled by finding no one once again. Oh silly girl! Blaming phantom people for your own clumsiness! It seems I'm the one that should apologize. If there was anyone to apologize to that is.
While she chided herself something caught her attention, something out of place. Inside the victorian styled bedroom on the third lay a showed figure. At least thats what it looked like. The doctor's had said her eyes were broken ever so slight so that things near would appear clear but those further off blurs of colors and shapes.
The only way to resolve the mystery was to step closer to the building and peer inside. Which wouldn't take to much effort it being eye level of course. The strange thing became much clearer and took on the likeness of a person! It couldn't have been one of the dolls, it was much to small and slender. Nothing like the plump round figures decorating her walls with rosy cheeks and an assortment of dresses.
Curiously staring at the new object which appeared to be lounging on the fabric cut out covers. Her mind began to whirl.
Oh how very strange indeed! It looks like it really is a little person!
The strange person had his arms - he was indeed a he she'd concluded after staring down at his grownup whiskers and square jaw - rapped behind his head in a casual position. Curly ebony locks lay in a dark halo like fashion around his face as the little angel seemed asleep. Rhythmically his chest rose and fell with each deep breath erasing any doubt she might have had that he was unreal.
His garments where a vine color green and smelled slightly mossy. His feet were clad in black leather and around his waist was a belt possibly made from birch. Was this one of those littler people? The kind her father use to tell her about during bedtime stories?
"..look just like you and me, Belle, and act very much the same way except for their unfortunate size."
"Can people really be that little poppa?" her small voice inquired.
"Of course they can! Just think of how we must appear to them! You may think yourself small compared to me but to one of the little people you'd be a giant! That is one reason they are seldom sean, easily frightened and very shy they are."
She thought of her being so very large to them and them so small to her that she giggled. "Are they like the moon dancers poppa? The ones momma use to talk about?"
Frowning only slightly he raised an eyebrow at his five year old daughter. "You mean 'fairies' Belle? The only thing similar between them and little people is there size. But no, they are very different."
"Oh do tell pleasepleasepleaseplease!!"
He'd do anything to make his little girl happy, besides she was very persistent. "Alright, alright, calm down now or it's lights out for you." He teased her and immediately she stilled and waited expectantly at her father.
"Good girl, Lets see...ah, yes. The fairies may be the same size as little people but they also have little wings to fly about with and pointed ears, like this." Pulling his ear up in a mock image.
"Oh they sound wonderful!! I wish I could fly about like they do." She bounced up and down with excitement and an over imaginative mind quick at work.
Gravely he shook his head and his eyes saddened. " No my child, they are not very wonderful. Even though they have such beautiful glamor."
"What do you mean poppa, why wouldn't they be??" That had put a halt to her rambunctious behavior.
"Well, it's hard to explain without confusing you. But I suppose maybe once in a time long ago they were wonderful."
"What happen to the fairy people?"
"People stopped believing in them I imagine, and their magic faded. But they still survive, a cursed creature of their former self. Fairies are very vain you see. And anytime they chance a soul with any bit of innocence pure enough to believe again... they maintain there beauty."
"Oh, that doesn't seem so bad, they just want to be pretty."
"Maybe Belle, but they will do anything to have one of those souls..."
Belle wasn't sure what he meant by that. " Do you believe in fairies father?"
His frown returned and depend the lines of his face aging him with dark thoughts displayed behind his eyes. "I believe of what they can do." Before she could ask what he'd meant a smile beamed once again and patted her hair. "But you shouldn't worry about stores, Belle, your not to see one of them now-a-days."
Kissing her on the cheek and leaving the night light on, he left her to dream about flying people with mischievous smiles and beautiful grey eyes...
Grey eyes? She had been careless, while she remembered about the pass she hadn't noticed how her warm breath fell on the small person effectively waking him. But now wide brown orbs stared into shattered moons. Unmoving. Then a devilish smirk danced on his lips and a twinkle to his eye.
"Its not polite to stare at people while they sleep you know." The amusement thick in his voice. She was speechless, her heart throbbing and mouth dry. Slowly he rocked on his heels looking her up and down revealing a pretty set of wings. "Oh this isn't very promising, much to young much much to young. Can't even speak she's so frightened!"
All that was going through her mind was. fairyfairyfairyfairyfairyfairyfairy...well you get the idea.
That had snapped her from her stupor. "Frightened? I am not frightened! How could a half-inch like you scare me?" She said rather incredulously.
"The giant talks! Well now, what a lovely voice it is, too. You must be eleven." Crossing his arms in a affirmative position.
"NO, I'm 12 in a half." She said proudly.
"All grown up are you! Ready to see the world and all its dangerous, no your not ready for that - hmmm."
Belle was bewildered. She was talking to a fairy!
"Tell me who you are and what you're doing in my playhouse."
"Well I couldn't stay in the closet now could I? Not with aLl those mothballs! I'd smell rather ridiculous - like you."
"I beg your pardon?" She said defensively, how rude of him! And after mentioning the wardrobe Belle pursed her lips.
"Did you do that on purpose?"
"DO what?" He said borishly.
"You very well know what! Locking me in that musty old thing in the dark with poor Mrs. Pettywither!"
"Oh thattt, well it was an accident not like it was some diobolical plan I had, besides I DID get you out didn't I?"
"Well yes you did but thats not excu-"
"And weren't you the one that decided to play hide and seek without permission?"
"Well...I was only looki-"
"And did you not also wake me from my nap?"
"Now listen here, Your the one who wa-"
"No you listen, I may not be as big as you, but I'm certainly much older that you. And are you not suppose to listen to grownups?" He asked slyly.
"Um, I'm not sure, I'm rather confused right now. FAIRIES shouldn't be in my room or anywhere else for that matter, my dad said so. And I think I'm quite done with talking to you."
Rolling his eyes in a very demeaning sort of way he leaned close to her. " Yes, father does know best. But what do you think? Do i look like I could harm you? Besides we have business!"
Blinking she only stared at him.
"No one toid you did they?" After continuing mute he sighed. "Great, leave everything to me..."
Gesturing towards her to bend down she stayed stubbornly where she stood. Again he motioned the same thing only a little impatient.
"Listen kid, I have things to do, you have things to do. All you have to do is listen to what I have to say, and i'll be out of your hair..."
"Alright, but no funny stuff."
"Cross my heart hope to fly." He said grinning.
What's the worst he can do, besides he is a fairy and this is probably the only time i'll ever meet on my whole life!
Bending down she lowered herself until her lips were once again right in front of the small man, or fairy. "Okay, by the way I'm Flip."
"Hi Flip."
"Greetings done, lets get this show on the road. Now hold still this will only take a minute."
She sat there obediently until she felt a light tingling sensation on her lip. then it was gone. "Hey what did you do to me?"
"Oh, that? I just sealed your first kiss of innocence and will be back to get the rest."
"WHAT!!"
Jumping up she made a notion of snatching him up and squeezing his brains out. But he was much quicker than her and zipped out of her reach and into the space above her head. "Now now don't get touchy, you've always been mine. Next time we meet I'll explain things to you. Goodbye love!"
And into the night flew the snickering glowing fairy
