(Hope you could keep a secret)

That isn’t even funny, that last qualification was immature to write. Now, I know the club was conceded. And the black background and red lettering gave off a dark image. Seemed interesting, but I don’t need to be part of a club just to get scholarships, my ninety-eight average would help me get into college. Besides, I have a job in the towns library. Now let’s see, give up making money for a club that might give me a scholarship or continue working? It wasn’t that hard for me to make my decision. Besides, through freshmen to Sophomore year, I’ve done more then five clubs and done volunteer work, I’m set for my resume.

I felt someone staring at me as I looked at the flyer on my desk along with blank library cards, applications, and my mythology text book. It was near closing time and soon I’m going to have to get to work. It’s my duty to make sure this Sang. Club meeting was over and placing all the lost books back on their shelves. My head rested on my left hand as my shoulder rest on the table. I pushed my black raven hair back to come out from its shadow. It was so quiet and I loved it that way. I was able to hear a few people in the library, the front desk security guard and a group of teens leaving, laughing and yelling. What was the point telling people to be quiet in the library if they didn’t listen. I don’t bother. The elevator bell rung and I heard the doors open. My head was still down and focused on my studies. I have a mythology test tomorrow.

Quickly moving steps came my way, no not running, walking. I shot my head up to look into beautiful blue eyes of a pale young boy, around my age I suppose. I never asked him how old he was, but I knew he went to my school. I thought his name was Jonathan, Jonathan Michael, and he was the president of the Sang Club. Also a zombie that just won’t stay died. He bothers me with his… niceness and always trying to be my friend. I didn’t need his friendship.

“What do you want Jonathan?” I asked.

“You know you have a bat in front of the building, right?” he revealed his white and straight teeth to me as a chuckled.

What was so funny?

“It’s not bothering anyone.”

“It’s a vampire bat.”

“ A Diaemus youngi White-winged Vampire Bat.” I said quickly so he could quickly go away.

“You know your bats…or do you know your vampires?” he folded his arms on the counter and sat his head down, his eyes looking into my owns.

I sat up then sat back in my comfortable chair. “We have vampires in the Social Studies section if you want to help yourself to it.” I quickly got up, closed my textbook, and walked around the connecting desk.

“Why do you always blow me off, Luna?” he asked me, and followed me to the children’s section.

“Get a clue on your way out. It’s closing time.” I placed all of my hair behind my ear.

“You’re the most stubborn gothic chick ever, you know that?”

He was getting to close and too loud. For once, I wanted to say, shush this is a library.

“And you are the most annoying boy I’ve ever known. You bother me at school then you bother me at my job, don’t you know to go away.”

Oh my gosh, the children’s section was always unorganized because the children throw, rip, and devour books like they are toys. Little monsters. Books were on the table, floor, seats, and at the computer center.

“OK, I deserved that.” he gave in and stopped following me.

I thought he was leaving but he ended up he just stood between the doorframe of the young adult and children section. I started toward the back table, a book about breast feeding was on the table. Why do they even have this kind of thing in the children’s section? I gathered the rest of the books, walked around gathering others, and placed them on the shelf. I was finished in ten minutes and when I head to the young adult section, Jonathan was gone. Yes! I smiled and walked into the other section. With Jonathan around I couldn’t go as fast as I want to go. Camera’s are still around but I’m much faster then that.

A girl like me are only found in books, comics, and television, a place where fantasy come true. I am a vampire. I laugh at myself just thinking about it too sometimes, but then the laughter disappears when I look how cursed I am. Ok, I do have the ability to run super face, fly, and a indestructible body, but its not fun. I live most of my life on human and rabbit blood I get from the cemetery. I don’t have vampire parents or in a cult. I’m just me, Luna. I don’t burse into flames when the sun hits my skin, not afraid of garlic, don’t have a human servant, sleep in a coffin, or anything. The worse thing about being a vampire was the rain because the rain makes me sick. I vomit, get a headache, and a high fever when it rains. So, am I proud to be a vampire? No. Am I weird? Yes. Am I your typical gothic chick trying to be a vampire wanna-be? No. I wear black because I like the color and it’s a warning sign for people like Jonathan to stay away. People hate the color of black because it stands for evil. Does not! Idiots.

I was finish and down working in ten minutes, the whole library, running around putting books back into their rightful place. I scared a few people by taking books off their table and bring starting a strong wind to mess up their papers. I was mean, I know. It’s what I have to do to catch my bus home. I left the losing to the security guard, Greg, as I left the place. Greg was always sleeping; some security.

“Night, Luna.” he waved through the glass door and locking it.

“Night,” I forced a smile on my face which soon dropped when I turned around to a black limo.

Strange. It was none of my business though. Across from the library was a bus terminal and to be human with no car, you have to take the bus. Acting human is what I do best.

“Need a ride?” Jonathans voice passed me like a gently breeze.

The sidewalk was so high I didn’t noticed when the limo pulled up in front of me with him as the passenger. It was a bit dark inside, but I could see they are others inside. I started to walk down the block to the avenue ahead with the limo following me.

“Luna. Luna. Luna. Luna, please.” he started to sing my name.

“Give it up, Jon, let her go.” a girl’s vice came from inside followed by laughing.

It must be Jonathan’s groupies from school, a few cheerleaders and jocks, popular and beautiful people. To me they are just extra pale and zombie looking. People call them beautiful for a reason I would never understand. All of them are jerks. I turned the corner and so did they. I wasn’t thinking of turning to a one way street, how unlike me. To my lock, the red light got them which gave me a chance to human run down the block and around the corner. I knew I only had a few minutes for this, but I needed to concentrate quickly. I made sure no one was around to jump up into the sky and fly as fast as I could. I was higher then the houses below me along with the library building. It was cold, but it made the limo pause and drove away. I whistled and waited for my only friend fly to my side. The white vampire bat was my friend and the only…friend I could talk to. I named him Vladimir, Vlad for short. When he came to my side he flapped his wings uncontrollably around me.

That was the boy you was talking about, the one who annoys you?

“Yeah, that’s him.”

Oh, Happy Thanksgiving!

Vlad hit himself against my chest and I held him in my arms. He reminded me of a little boy sometimes for a grown bat. I pet him on the head and held him.

“Thanks, Vlad.” I held him up by the body. “Where did you hear that from?”

Everyone has been saying that as they past the library to each other. It’s the human way to greet people I suppose.

“You are funny, Vlad.”

Then why aren’t you smiling?

“I never smile.” I started to move against the cold winds.

Flying in autumn want always cold and breezy. What would I give for spring.

I landed in park with a dirty pond so Vlad could go around to eat mosquitoes while I wait on the bench. I wrapped my jacket around me as I waited. I heard him yelling about how he missed a few and saw something. Vlad was a curious animal and a funny one at that. All through the night he was always filled with energy since he slept through the day. The life of a vampire bat - no - any bat. I snuck my hand through my coat and read my watch, it read eleven thirty-five. Now, why wasn’t I at home in bed or with my family on Thanksgiving? Because my mom is a drunk and I didn’t feel like hearing the men leaving and going through the door all night until morning. My mom was a prostitute to me. She went out to a bar, got drunk, and bring home men for a good time to let them leave in the morning. But, for some reason she got up and left on her own. She went to Hollywood for a week. I found out when she left a message on the telephone last Sunday. Do I care if she came back or not… I think I did. Well sooner or later, she’s going to have to be alone to take care of herself. I have college plans to attend too.

“Vlad, come on!” I yelled as I started to walk toward home.

Arriving home was a surprise, I even had to walk around the block a couple of times to make sure it was the right address. A car was parked in the driveway, we don’t have a car, and the curtains showed my mother having a romantic dinner with a handsome and attractive guy. But that wasn’t the point really, the point was the large rock she was playing with on her finger. My mother was happy, carefree, and clean looking. I could only wish that her going to Vegas cleaned her up or this guy. But then again, she’s an idiot. Who did she think she was? Going away for a week and coming back married. Luckily for me I didn’t have to worry about her getting pregnant. The doctor said she couldn’t have children. I quickly walked across the street as Vlad flew around the house and disappeared. I didn’t know either to storm in and yell or ask questions. I hate having men in my house. Yes, my house! I paid for that house while my mom paid for her liquored. Opened the screen door then the other to a warm and for the first time clean and fresh smell. It normally smelt like cigarettes or liquor. And to my surprise, my mother got up and hugged me like I came back from the dead. Too hard and tight.

“Luna, baby!” she pulled back, both hands on my arms. “Happy Thanksgiving! I was so worried you was kidnapped or…oh I don’t want to think about the rest anymore. What matters is that your home now. And you get to meet your step-father.” she guided me in and turned my body to face my step-father.

This was not the mom that left me, cursed at me, and who I had to yell at for stealing my money. She was dressed in a brown outfit but it was nothing, compare to the load of jewelry she had one. She was sparkling. The diamond necklace was burning my eye. Her hair wasn’t surrounded by her usual wet and nap, but it was clean and in a high pony tail with curls. This was not my mother. She smells, she smells good!

Oh, and she is not a vampire or knew I am a vampire. If she did know then I would like to ask some questions.

The man she was sitting with quickly got up from the table and stood before me. He was tall, about five nine, and was handsome. He looked like the business type with his suit, vest, tie, and shinny shoes. He even had a chain for a pocket watch in his pocket. Who was this guy? One side of me would had said Pimp, and the other would have said Professional Pimp. He didn’t show me a business card he’s out of here for sure. I’m not taking free loaders into my house.

“Hello, my name is Michael Reese. And you must be Luna. I’ve heard so much about you from your mother.” he smiles at me, a white and straight teeth smile. I expected gold teeth.

“Funny, I don’t know anything about you. My mother just vanished and…”

“Now, Luna. Come and sit and join us.” my mother pushed me forward to her chair on the other side of the table.

Michael Reese placed another chair for my mother to sit. Before me was her leftovers and glass of wine. No wonder why she was happy, she’s drunk!

“Michael Re…”

“You could call me father.” he suggested.

Michael Reese, what do you do for a living?” I pushed my mother’s plate away from me.

“I am a judge.”

“Big money man.” I looked at my mother pull up a chair next to him and held him with a smile.

Joker. Her red lips pulled back like the Joker’s from Batman comics. Oh, she was a gold digger for sure. My mom earned a new title, from Prostitute to Gold-Digger. Pathetic.

“Are you going to live here with us?”

“Why of course.”

“What do you want from here?” I asked him directly into his green eyes. “What would a man like you want with my broke mother?”

“Luna!” my mother warned.

“It’s ok, she’s an over protected child. I understand that” he pulled my mother’s hair behind her ear. “It shows her love for you, you are blessed to have such a daughter.” he looked at me. “All I want is your trust and your mother’s love. And maybe some day, you could call me father.”

“On that over protected child comment, I’m passed a child. I was doing my mother’s taxes at age ten.” I looked to my mother in disgust. “Going away for a week then coming back with a man who dressed you up is bullshit.” I quickly got up and went upstairs my room.

“Luna, that is no way to speak to your mother!” he had the nerve to yell at me.

I held my tongue, who is he to come into my house and boss me around? What nerve! I took care of my mother and this is what I get in the end? Bullshit. I slammed by three lock door and entered my cave of darkness. My room was my only place I could be myself. I kept my blood pouches I stole from the hospital a few weeks ago and supernatural readings in my closet. My broken computer was where I kept my diary, in the monitor. I took it out and wrote about my wonderful Thanksgiving.

Dear Diary

Today is Thanksgiving and a man is in my house. I’m having a GREAT THANKSGIVING!

I heard a tap on my window and turned around to see Vlad flapping. I went over to my window and opened the window doors to let him in. His wing hit my head as I forehead he came in then hit against my wall.

“Are you ok?” I turned around and look at him get up from my bed and hung from my closet frame.

I’m fine.

I turned around to close my door windows and found a rose on a near by tree with a tag on it. I reached for it and read the tag.

Happy Thanksgiving Luna.

Who send me these roses? I had more then six brocades of roses from the past ten years. I even waited for my mysterious person a few night but no luck. I don’t need a stalker or a love right now. I signed, closing the doors and lock it. I turned my back to the window ceil and sniff the rose. Before I sunk down into a love spell I focused on the important matter. This man in my house.

Like I was saying before Vlad came in. My mother has a new lover or play toy, but how it looks It’s more the other way around. But, between me and you, I have to say he’s cute with his dark curly hair and bright green eyes. OMG, I think I’m falling for him. No Luna. No, you wouldn’t sink down to that level. Besides, he’s my step-father. Gross! I have to hand it to my mother on getting a good catch. And now I picture him in my head, I think he will be delicious… Which reminds me, I have to go out and eat or sneak downstairs to get something. Why sneak you wonder? I think I’m feeling guilty by being rude. But, I do have a right to do it. Don’t I? I believe I do. Yes.

I think I’m going to get a meal for the night then turn it in. I closed my diary and placed it back where it belonged. I opened my doors to my window and step up. I looked back at Vlad and asked, “You want to go hunting with me, Vlad?”

No, I feasted enough but I will come for the flight.

He let go of the frame, flew down then up to exit pass me.
