Magpies are beautiful dont you think. I saw three that day. Three for a girl, the girl of my dreams. She was perfect in every way. She had long dark long dark hair that framed her tanned face. Her face sculpted to every defined detail. Her lips perfectly shaped and her nose was not a cute button nose but it was not a witch’s nose either. It was perfect and straight. Her eyes shaped and the grey orbs that shone back at you were perfect. Everything was perfect about her.
She was tall for her age but her height suited her perfectly. Her skin beautifully tanned and even though she hardly ever smiled, you could tell she was soulfully happy because her mouth was always slightly smiling.
She was the most popular girl in school and I was just a person on the sidelines. I was popular but she always went for the people that went unnoticed. I did not know why maybe because if she broke up with them then it would be easier but she goes through boyfriends as I go through chocolate ice cream.
On the other hand, Maggie is my best friend. She told me nearly everything about her. We did not have any secrets or so I thought. It was the day I saw three Magpies and it was outside school. They say if you see one and you say ‘Hello Mr Magpie how is your wife and kids?’ Then your bad luck or sorrow is broken but with three, there is no point.
You could take it many different ways. It could mean girl friends, a female best friend, or even just a random female. It could mean anything. For me that day it was seeing Maggie. I did not really understand what was going on because she acted weird. She looked pale and she was not herself. I did not really notice until that lunchtime. She acted normal all day. She smiled at people jokes and she talked to me like normal but lunchtime was when everything changed. Lunchtime was when her biggest secret lumped itself on my shoulders.
I sat in my normal seat and like normal, Maggie was not eating. I had gotten used to her not eating at lunch times. She sat next to me with everyone around us and I notice she was not herself. She seemed to be swaying slightly. She finally landed her head on my shoulder. I did not know what to do. She led there staring into thin air.
“Is she alright?” Meredith said from opposite us. I looked at her and then down at Maggie.
“I dont know Mere” I replied she sighed and said.
“Mason you should take her to the office. She really does not look so good” I nodded
”But why me?” I asked. She looked at me and she looked disappointed in me. ”You are her closest friend Mason. You know everything about her. Besides I know of your little crush on her.” I reddened a little but composed myself.
“That is none of your business Meredith. Leave that out of this,” I warned her. She shrugged and went back to her food. I sighed and picked our things up. I carried both out packs and I carried Maggie bridal style toward the office.
We were about half way there and she stirred. Her eyes were clouded and silvery. “Mason” she whispered. I looked down at her.
“Shh” I told her. She looked at me frantically but refused to move. She did not fight me. I was just about to round the corner when she whispered, “I need blood. Oh god, the pain. You know you smell so good right now Mase” I stopped and looked down at her.
“What are you on about Mags?” She shrugged and wrapped her arms around my neck. She pulled herself up and then she leaned up to my ear.
“Find a classroom that will be empty for a long time. Please, if you dont I will die” I blinked and stalked off back the way I came. I knew where I was going. The old English classroom. It had been empty for over a year and no one used it ever.
I reached in no time and then I sat Maggie on table. She did not let go. I looked down at her. I placed the bog and the floor without breaking eye contact.
“What is wrong Maggie? I am worried.” She smiled and sighed.
“I am a vampire Mason. I live on blood. I do not eat human food hence why I dont eat at lunchtime. I told you there was one secret I had to keep a secret well that was it. Right now I am dying. I have not had any blood since yesterday morning.” I rolled my eyes. This did not bother me.
“Why not Mags? I you know how I tell you to eat and yet you dont” she looked at me. She was surprised I was not freaking. I was not. I understood. I understood why she told me I smelt good why she disappeared on sunny days and why she went out with the un-noticed people in the school. I understood everything. I smiled at her and tilted my head back.
“Drink some of mine, my love,” I told her. She looked at me scared.
“What? I cannot do that. It is wrong and against the law” she said to me.
“What law?” I asked.
“The law that tells all Night Creatures to not drink the blood of loved ones. Certainly not of their soul mate unless they are turning them” I blinked at her.
“You love me?” She nodded “Why? I am just a person on the sidelines. No one important”
“That is where you are wrong. You are my soul mate you are important to me.” I did not know what to say. I sighed again and tilted my head so my neck showed.
“Maggie, please drink. If you have to turn me fine just please drink” She looked at me and I knew she was refusing. Her stubbornness had always been a bad trait in her. I took her head in my hands, I rubbed my finger on the canines, and then I moved her head to my neck. I held her there and I closed my eye willing her to take some. Soon I felt a pin like pain in my neck and I knew her teeth had sunk in.
I did know what would become of me as I felt my blood drain out in pulses and frankly, I did not care. I had gotten my girl. I had gotten the one I loved. If I did not pull through this, at least I would have the satisfaction of Maggie’s lips on my neck.
