Geek Chic:
A Blog
Manual in many parts
A ADD and company produc
Step 1: Getting started
-What you need.
The very first thing you will need to begin using our Geek Chic: A Blog product would be a computer (sold separately). At this point it doesn't not matter what kind of computer you chose or how old. It would be better for both you and the product if it was top of the line machine, but this is not a requirement..
From here you need to make sure that your computer is working correctly and is completely powered up. In most cases you may need a batter (sold separately) or a good wall charger (also sold separately). If you experiencing any difficulties with your computer machine you should consult the manual for that product, not for ours.
After you know the computer is functioning correctly it would be a good idea to find a place to use the product. Most customers prefer to use a desk and chair but this is completely optional. Some customers prefer the floor or a bed. Just keep in mind that the time you spend using our product may effect your physical comfort depending on where you chose to use Geek Chic: A Blog.
Lastly you will need some kind of Internet connection. How you get this connection is of no consequence to us, be it legal or not. However it is recommended that you do not steal. It is against the law.
-In the beginning…
Setting up your product.
So you have all the necessary equipment and other products (all sold separately) to use our Geek Chic: A Blog. It is now safe to actually start the set up step to begin using this product. It may be a daunting task at first but we have made is simple and easy for you to figure out and soon you will be a pro.
The first thing to do is to start up your computer. As you are sitting and waiting for this to happen you might like to sit and think about whatever pleases you the most. Being in a good mood may help you if any things should go wrong in the up coming minuets to hours you spend staring at your screen.
Once the computer is up and running, connect to the Internet. There are several ways to do this and it would completely ridiculous for us to describe each one, so we are leaving this part up to you. It is most likely that you already know how to do this part seeing as you found our product to begin with but incase this is not true it would be a good idea to call either your Internet provider (a bad idea if you a stealing it) or call up a good computer help desk. If this happens we advise you to learn the Internet before you begin using our product.
Finally, when you have connected and are using your preferred browser (though some are superior to others and might be better to use) go to the address bar and type:
.edu/~?action=1&permission=0
It may seem like a long address but it will help in the end. Otherwise you may find yourself somewhere you do not wish to be.
If you cannot find the address bar or do not know what the address bar is. Sit back, breath and then go ask someone who actually knows what they are doing. Then for the rest of the use of this product, always have them at your side incase you are still clueless (which will probably be the case).
When all that is done you are one our way to fully enjoying the experience we have created for you.
Step 2: Public user
-What is this?
A public user is a user who does not need a password or a username to use our product. This is for the simplest of user who usually do not like to do much but sit around and observe. These users a have the ability to view public post (post that contributors have deemed good for all users to view), search through public post, view public post of a selected category, and view current statistics about the public post in the product. This class of user is easily entertained.
If this is the kind of user you are and wish to remain the only skill task you will need is how to use a mouse and type a few letters.
-Viewing home page.
If you have gone through the set up section in Step 1 then you already know how to get to the home page. At this point you can use your mouse or the arrow keys on the keyboard to scroll up and down on the page. This way you can view all that is available to you through this product.
If you are on another page that is not the home page, and wish to get back simply look at the side bar on the right hand side of the product. Towards the top of the page, there will be a link that says 'Home'. Click this link and you will once again be viewing the home page. If you chose to click any of the other links however, you will not be viewing the home page.
-Viewing a single post.
Unlike the home page where you get several post available to you, there is a single post view that you can utilize as well. In this view you can view the content on one post (not two or three) as well as the comments that a general user (see step 3) or a private user (see step 4) have made about the post. This view cuts out the distractions that some customers find when viewing the home page.
It is at this point that if a private user wishes to become a general user, they can. (see step 3, Adding anonymous comments).
To get to this view you can (thought there are other ways) view the home page and then click the number next to Comments, for the post you wish to view single-ly. This is the easiest way to do this. Thought the same is true for a category view as well.
If you are doing a search and wish to view a single post all you have to do is click the title of the post in the results.
On the stats page you can find a view post as well. Simply click on the title to view in single post form.
If any of this is unclear to you it might be wise to not use our product or to just start clicking things. Warning, clicking random things may lead to even more confuse before it leads to understanding.
-Doing a search.
Finding the search page is fairly easy. It has a link that is located in the side bar on the right side. It says 'Search'. Click that link and you will find yourself presented with the search for form. At this point you just need to fill out the terms you wish to search for and what type of search you wish to do. We have even made it simple for you to choose what kind of search you want to do by giving you a drop down menu to use.
To start conducting the search you have set up click the 'Search' button. If you mistakenly hit the 'Clear Form' button all the information you have just entered will be lost. This is slightly unfortunate for you but maybe you should have known better. It was labeled 'Clear Form' for a reason.
When you do hit the correct button a result page should show up. It will tell you how many results came back long with those results. What you wish to do with that information is completely up to you.
Kinds of searches
Title – This search will try and find your search terms in the title of the public post and return the matching post.
Author – This search is like a title search but will search the author names and then return these public posts.
Summary – This search does a search on the abstract of an article. If you do not know what abstract means then go get your self a good dictionary. It should be somewhere near the front. Public post matching your search term are returned
User – this search is nothing like the first three searches. Here your search terms are used to search though the users in the product. It then returns a list of all users that match your search term.
-Viewing a select Category.
A category is a general theme that a post can fall under. We have created them so that if you like to read post about this or that you can get them all in one place. This can come in handy when you do not wish to read anything else. (It is known reading different categories will broaden your knowledge base, but we can not force you to do so.)
To view a select Category you just need to find that category link on the right side bar. If you cannot find the category like you are looking for then it probably does not exist and you need to try for something else. When you find the category you want or that looks interesting just click on it and the post will appear, as if by magic.
If you think of a good category for the product feel free to tell us by word of mouth or by sending us a email. If we think it is worthy of our time and effort we may just add it. And think you can tell all your friends and family that you came up with that idea.
-Understanding Stats
You may have noticed that in the side bar (on the right) that there is a link labeled 'Stats'. This is an interesting link to click. If you are brave enough.
When clicked it will reveal a number of interesting facts. The first one is a list of 'Active Contributors'. This is a list of users who have contributed post in our product.
Next you will see 'Top Posters' and 'Top Commentors'. These two sections display the top five post contributors and comment contributors respectively. It even shows the number of post or comments that user has done, just so you can see we are telling the truth.
From there you will see 'Highest Rated Post', 'Most Popular Post', 'Newest Post', and 'Newest Comment'. These pretty much show what they tell you. All of them are on public post because you are still in public user mode.
Step 3: General user
-What is this?
A general user is a private user that knows the secret password. This secret password gives you the ability to make anonymous comments on any of the public post.
If you would like to become a general user contact any of the ADD team. Simply contacting the team and asking for the password will not guarantee that you receive it. A rigorous character test will be preformed before any sensitive information is given out.
if you are one of the lucky ones to receive the general password, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT, give it to a friend or a stranger, or anyone you know. If you are found giving out this super secret password we may have to send our special group of ninja squirrels after you and your beloved computer.
-Adding anonymous comments
Once you are a general user adding a anonymous comment is easy. When you view the comments for a reading (see step 3 Viewing A Single Post), you will see the comment box at the end of the page. Fill it out and then at the super secret password that you now know. Click 'Submit' and the comment should be added to the page as anonymous.
If you do not know the super secret password then you are not a general user and should not be attempting to add a comment. Go back to Step 2 and try again.
If you abuse your commenting privileges the above mentioned ninja squirrels will once again be sent after you and your computer. (We have ways of finding out who is posting.)
Step 4: Private user
-What is this?
A private user is NOT a public user. They have access to features that public user could never even dream about. They get to view ALL post and users (view users is not available through any other user type, to see how to do this see Step 4 Viewing Other Users), so when they do searches, view the home page, or look at the stats they do not get an edited version of what is available through this product. They also have the ability to added post and comment using their own name.
A private user is only available to a selected select group for the best around. To become one of these members contact one of the ADD team. Besides the rigorous character test that you must past (The same one to become a general user) you must also submit a 42-page essay about why you are a good candidate for becoming a private user.
It should be pointed out that only experienced general users should try out for this user status. At this point they know all the ins and outs of this product so should be comfortable learning how to use all the private member features. Knowing the basics is very important.
Once you become a private user you are a private user for life*.
*Subject to change if you are unwilling to do as we say when we say it. Ninja squirrels may be activated if things get to out of control.
-logging in.
To log in as a private user you may go to any page on the site and find the right side bar. At the top there is a login for that you will have to use. Just places your username and password in the correct field and then hit 'login'.
If your username and password are correct, and only if they are correct you will then access to all private user functions. If they are not correct, sadly maybe you should go do something else.
If you are not a private user and try to use the login form… nothing will happen but a lonely error message telling you that either your username or password are incorrect. This is not a very productive thing to do but sometimes customers get a kick out of trying to log in, even when they can not.
-Adding a post.
Once you are logged in you will notices several new links at the top of the right hand side bar (if you are not logged in you will not see these links). One of these links is 'New Post'. If you have something Smart, Intelligent, Witty, Sarcastic, or Fun to say then click this link. (If not please keep your thoughts to yourself.)
This link will give you a form to fill out to make a post of your very own. You must give it a title, category, privacy setting (sometimes the public users can handle what us private users have to say) and abstract. You have the option of adding a picture or text content (or both!). After you hit the submit button it is up for all to view or just the private users, depending on the privacy setting you choose.
It you add enough post you could become the Top Poster of this product. A title that anyone dreams of achieving.
A small warning to point is, if you post something that is not Smart, Intelligent, Witty, Sarcastic, or Fun your post will be deleted and you might loose your private user status. Ninja squirrels will only be used in extreme situations.
-Making a comment.
Making a comment as a private user is much like that of a general user. When you view a post single-ly (see Step 2 Viewing A Single Post) you will see a comment box at the bottom. Unlike the general user, however, you will not need to put in a password. Our product is so smart that it remembers who you are. It will add your username to the comment.
Much like the post, if you add enough comments you could become the Top Commentor of this product. It is not as a high a title as Top Poster but a wonderful title non-the-less.
If you post a comment that any way brings down the credibility of this product or lowers the friendly-ness of it's environment they you may loose your private user statues. Ninja squirrels will be used.
-Viewing your profile
When you become a private user you will also receive a user profile. This is a wonderful thing because now any other private user and come and see how awesome you are. They get to see who you are and what you have brought to this product.
Sometimes, though, you may wish to see what others see about you when they view this profile. To do this there is a handy link on the right hand side bar. When you click it everything about you will show up and you get to see how awesome you are.
-Editing your profile
Sometimes your private user profile is not as awesome as you wish it to be. In this case you can edit your profile and make it so. All you need to do is find the link in the right hand side bar and click it. After you have done so a edit for will appear before you. All your old information will be there so all you have to do it change it to what it should say.
Remember that you must enter your password to update your profile. Failure to do so will lead to an un-edited profile page. All that work will have been for not. So remember to add your password in the correct field.
-Editing your password
While editing your profile you may have noticed that there was two extra fields asking for a new password. It probably caused you to wonder what these fields were for. Maybe the ADD team made a mistake when they created the form.
The truth is we did not make a mistake (nor do we ever, really). These fields are for you to use when you wish to create a new password. You may have several reasons for wishing to do so and with these fields you can. All you have to do is enter you current password and then fill out the two fields with the new password you wish to use. Both new fields must have the same password. Otherwise nothing will change.
-Viewing other users
Viewing other users (private users) is fun and easy to do. Every time you see a users name you have the ability to click that user and read all about them. It will look exactly like your profile, only with that user's information in the selected spots instead of yours.
This feature is not available to general or public users. So if you try to click a user name as these kind of users, disappointment will follow. Nothing will happen.
-logging out.
After you have been logged in for a while and have done everything you wish to do you can log out by clicking the link that reads 'Logout' at the top of the right hand side bar. You will no longer have access to any of the private member features. You have been down graded.
Step 5: FAQ
This section will be filled out as soon as actually get any questions. So if you have a question, send it to us.
Step 6: All about ADD and Company
There is so much to say about the ADD team and ADD and Company. It would be too hard to keep in all with in the assigned space of this manual. To put it shortly the ADD team and ADD and Company are pure awesomeness. They have to be to achieve something as cool as this product. They worked hard to complete this product so you better like it*.
If you would like to know more about the ADD team and or ADD and Company contact any of the ADD team. Ask them your questions and wait eagerly for them to reply.
*failure to like this product will lead you to being chased by ninja squirrels
