Armageddon-like-Love
You're an end–of–the–world kind of guy, with your supernova–smile and a stride that makes the earth shake. You shouldn't be with a new–age girl like me, who wears a broken heart like it's going out of style and would rather be forgotten than go out with a bang.
I tell you “maybe you're it, the end of all life as we know it.”
(the Gerry to my Holly)
Because, boy, you could destroy it all with one blink of your pretty brown eyes if only you tried. And it would be a beautiful, glorious destruction.
You shake your head and laugh and smile and say “are you kidding? It's only just begun.”
And I wish you were right, but I think you're wrong, because life is going nowhere fast and I think the world's stopped turning. But I keep quiet and nod to make you happy as we kick up snow and dead leaves.
You tell me to make a wish, that it'll come true, and I'm struck dumb. Don't you know that stars don't fall from trees, and dead leaves are good for nothing but compost - that once upon a time, I tried wishing on them and they never lead you back home to me?
I lost faith in our all-seeing hearts long, long ago.
(i hope your mother can forgive me for being the doubting fool i turned out to be)
"I wish I may,
I wish I might
have the wish
I wish tonight," I mutter because I just can't say no to you.
But you don't know I'm wishing on you, not the leaves under the snow and my sneakers or the stars in the sky, because you, unlike them, have this almost-magical ability to make dreams come true.
I wish you'd collide with me, boy, the way a meteor hits the earth.
And you brush against me, your cold, bare skin against my sweater.
"What'd you wish for?"
"Don't you know it won't come true if I tell you?"
And your smile makes my insides quake, and I know the end is near. Our time is running out, and it's all your fault, meteor–boy.
Let's watch the fireworks explode as we fall into a love-like-Armageddon.
