Laying
out on her bed, Jennie stared at the ceiling as an uncomfortable
sensation passed over her. On the floor laid Rem, sleeping as if
nothing was wrong. The window of the room was unlatched, letting the
cool night air swim through the bedroom. Chirps of crickets echoed
endlessly through the surrounding forests and all she could do was
stare at her ceiling.
Rowen's amber eyes
haunted her mind as she sat up in bed abruptly, casting her eyes over
Rem who rolled over in his sleep. Her face softened at his nearness.
He was so close that she could just reach out to him. Shaking her
head, she pushed back the thought of curling up beside him on the
floor. She didn't need him waking up and finding her next to him.
Pushing herself out of bed, she walked to the door to the
hallway and opened. A gasp almost escaped her lips when a hand
clamped over her mouth and she saw her attacker to hold a finger to
his lips.
"It's just me.” She was
pulled from her room.
"Nahele," she
cursed quietly as she found his brown eyes gazing at her in the
darkness of the hall. "Why the hell are you in the house at this
hour?!"
"Quiet," he mumbled as
he stared at her intensely. "I heard Rowen attacked you earlier.
Are you okay?" His eyes ran across her body, checking to make
sure she was okay.
"I'm fine," she
said, pushing the boy away from her. "Honestly, do you think if
Rowen had harmed me in any way, that I would be still standing
here?"
"That's a good point,"
Nahele whispered as he smiled slightly. "I know what he can do,
so you being in one piece is good. Still I was worried. Afraid I lost
my Seraph."
"I'm okay," she
replied with a smirk. "Stop worrying about me so much."
"Are you going to be okay alone?" Nahele asked.
"Rem is with me," Jennie said, noting the look of
dissatisfaction in Nahele's eyes. "It's okay. He's sleeping on
the floor until Nick or Riley can move his bed into there."
"Be careful," he whispered, pushing her back to her
door. "You should go back to sleep, too. Night." He turned
around, heading downstairs, while Jennie stood quietly.
