A Christmas Wish

Once upon a time, there was a boy. Not a little one, though. This was a young man. Let us call him Harry. Harry was a happy young man. He had a big family, supporting friends and lots of stuff. He had all sorts of books and games. He just loved them. But, this Christmas, he wanted more. He wanted that new videogame, the one everyone had already. That was what he told to his mother, when she asked him. However, she said he was too old for that kind of games and she would not spend any more money on games. That let Harry down. Why could she spend money on everything else, but not in the only thing he wanted? That sure did not make any sense to him. But Harry did not say a thing. The days passed and his younger sister was all excited. Not Harry. Harry just pretended that December was a month like any other, with no Christmas. And so the days passed. Harry just spent his time playing games and reading books. He kept wake all night long, every night, reading book after book. Then, he overslept until lunch time. And so the days passed.

On the night before Christmas Eve, his godmother visited him. She went to his house to give him his present, since she was going to spend the night and the day after in her house. Harry gave her his present, thrilled. He just loved to give people what they wanted. And he did make sure to know what she wanted. He just wished he could see her expression. Unfortunately, he could not. So, she left and he returned to his videogames, trying to ignore what would happen next day. As always, he just kept wake all night long, reading another of his books.

Then, when he awaked on the next day, he changed his routine. Instead of spend all day playing videogames, he went to his parents’ bed and watched television the whole day. Eventually, he fell asleep, too tired after so many nights without sleeping. During a dream, his mother awaked him, calling him for dinner. He sat and he looked to the faces around the table. Mother. Father. Sister. He. Taking his fork, he started to eat. He talked a bit with his younger sister, replied to his mother, and finished his dinner. After that, he went straight to his parents’ bed.

The hours started to pass, that was something his younger sisters did not let him forget. He just remained quiet in the bed, watching movies. He knew he could not go to bed and sleep, so he waited. And waited. When the time finally arrived, he did not feel any happier, like his sister. She just jumped and screamed all over the house. Then, she started to call him, but he did not want to go. And then his mother came, so he had to go. He sat on the sofa, wishing the time would go faster. However, his wish did not come true. He started to open his presents. Smiled when he saw his godmother’s present. She really knew how to surprise him. For the rest of the presents, he just faked happiness. He did not receive what he wanted. At all. He took his presents and went to his room. There, he left them on his bed and started playing videogames. He sent a text message to his friend, telling her what he received. She was supposed to do the same, but she did not. Probably, she was too busy with all of her family. That did not really matter. She would tell him by the morning.

Later that night, when everyone was sleeping, Harry sent to the living room and sat on the sofa. There, he looked at the Christmas’ Tree and started to cry. He wrapped his arms around his legs and stood there, crying. Then, he stopped. He heard bells. A glowing light appeared in front of him, and from that light came a woman. That sure was one of the most beautiful women he ever saw. She had long blond hair and two glowing blue eyes. The woman stretched her hand in his direction and he took her. She asked him if he knew why he was crying. He looked at her confused. Of course he knew why he was crying, it was because his parents did not gave him the only thing that he wanted. She smiled at him and agreed with her head. She said he was right; it was his parents’ fault that he did not get the only thing he wanted. Once again, he looked at her confused. Deeply, he knew he was just being a baby. But she said he was wrong, he did not know the real reason why he was crying. She held his face with her both hands and looked him in the eyes. She told him he was crying because he wanted to spend the Christmas Eve with his family. And then, he realized. He did not want any games or books. He just wanted his family. He missed his family. Since his parents had a fight with his uncles and aunts he never spent another Christmas Eve with them again. That was why he was so sad, after all.

He looked the woman in the eyes and thanked her. She was not ready to leave, though. She had one last thing to do. She told him she could grant him a wish. Any kind of wish he wanted. He was amazed. He could get anything. He had so many things to ask her. Unfortunately, he had to choose just one. That sure was hard. He sat on the sofa, while she looked at him, smiling. Was not it obvious? The only thing he wanted was to be with his family on Christmas. The woman smiled and said she always had known what he wanted. The important was that he knew what he truly wanted. She blinked at him, waved her wand, and in the next second she was gone.

Harry woke up next day on his bed, without knowing how he had got there. He heard lots of noise coming from outside his room. He got up and went to his living room to find out what was happening. He just could not believe in his eyes. His whole family was there. All his uncles, aunts and cousins. Even his godmother. What a joy. Harry could not be any happier. That sure was the Christmas he always wanted. And he would not miss a bit of it. So, for the first time in many months, Harry spent the whole day without playing videogames or reading books. But he did not miss it at all, because he finally had the only thing he wanted. His family.

The End
