Chapter 5
The blaring sun and the frigid morning air woke Camrie the following morning. Squinting, she sat up in the sand, rubbing her lower back with one hand will rubbing her eyes with the other. Slowly, she became adjusted to the bight light and scanned the area.
People were splayed across the beach, sleeping wherever they’d fallen the night before. Smoke rose in tendrils from the blackened remains of the fire, from the night before.
Camrie rubbed her hands up and down her bare arms, trying to get warmer, as her eyes finally landed on the large mass of water before her. Her eyes widened and her mouth fell open a little as she stared at the lake’s mirror like surface. Tree’s and mountains reflected of the water, the soft waves barely disturbing the serene image. Breath escaped her when she saw the craggy snow capped mountains. In the crevasses snow-white glaciers rested, slowly inching their way down the slope.
The sound of rustling fabric drew Camrie’s attention to the boy lying a few feet away from her. Strands of almost black hair fell over the boy’s face, the tips tickling his eyelids and the bridge of his straight nose. Camrie’s finger’s itched to brush the hair out of his face. She pulled her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around her legs, her hands clasped around her jeans tightly, as she turned to watch Ocean.
Ever since Camrie had been a little girl, she had had a strange infatuation with watching people sleep. On weekends her parents would wake up to find her sitting at the end of their bed, staring. When Seth and Belle were born, Camrie would stay up late watching the babies sleep, then wake up early to watch them wake up. Many times, her mother would find her curled up in a ball, asleep by the crib. To her, sleeping people were more fascinating then any television show. For the longest time, Camrie had thought that the only place people were really honest and themselves was when they were sleeping; that changed when she was then though.
Ocean’s eyelids crinkled a little as he began to wake up. His head shifted against his backpack, trying to find a more comfortable place. A small smile formed on Camrie’s lips and grew bigger as the sleeping boy drew closer and closer to awareness. By the time Ocean’s eyes opened, Camrie was wearing a wide, eager grin. As soon as he focused on her, he jumped back a little, startled. “Awhhh!” he yelped softly before realizing who it was.
“Morning,” Camrie chirped, still watching him.
“Stop that,” he grumbled.
“Stop what?” she questioned, not understanding.
“Being so happy. It’s too early,” Ocean pulled his knees up and rubbed his eyes with the heel of his hands.
“But…”
“Uh ba-ba!” Ocean held a finger up at her, cutting her off. “Not till after breakfast.”
“But…”
“Uh ba-ba!” Ocean cut her off again as he pulled his bag out from behind him and began to rummage through it.
“Fine,” Camrie puffed as she got to her feet. She looked around for a second before grabbing an empty saddlebag and starting towards a tree. “I’ll be right back.” Ocean glanced up at her before he went back to searching his bag.
When Camrie came back, a few minutes later, she found that Ocean had changed into a pair of green and blue swim-trunks with a gray t-shirt. She sat down on the sand next to him and set the saddlebag between them, pulling an apple out of it for herself. She watched him carefully, she had a feeling that he wasn’t a morning person.
“Can I talk yet?” Camrie asked in a cautious tone, watching him through her dark eyelashes. He didn’t respond for a long moment. During that time, he took a bite of his apple and turned toward her. She raised an eyebrow, questioningly. A second later, he spit the chunk of apple at her shoulder, hitting it dead on. Camrie glanced at the apple then back up at him to find a satisfied, triumphant, smirk on his lips. She rolled her eyes, a small smile on her lips.
“Go ahead,” Ocean said, turning to stare out at the lake.
“So what are we doing today?” Camrie asked eagerly, watching him. His shoulder raised in a shrug as he continued to eat his apple. “So what’s your little brother like?” Ocean glanced over at her and raised an eyebrow, silently why she was talking so much.
“He’s five. He like to run around screaming,” Ocean answered, smirking at his brief description.
“What’s his name?”
“Ben,” Ocean bit into his apple, staring across the lake.
“What’s your sister like?” Camrie asked, curiously.
“She’s twenty-eight and always has people over,” he said. “Her names Sarah.”
“Where do you live?”
“You ask a lot of questions. You know that?” Ocean responded, tilting his head slightly as he looked at her sideways. Camrie fell silent, watching the people down the beach as they slowly woke up, completely unknowing that Ocean was watching her with a curious look.
As the students became more away, food became a major issue. Several of them had never lived outside of town, and didn’t know a thing they were doing. Camrie could see a read headed girl sitting at the water’s edge, Indian Style, with her arms folded over her chest, pouting. Sluggishly, Camrie clambered to her feet and started over to the redhead.
“Hi,” Camrie greeted her kindly as she dropped down beside the redhead.
“What do you want?” the redhead growled.
“Nothing,” Camrie said innocently.
“Then go away,” the redhead ordered, looking up and glaring at Camrie.
“I’m Camrie Smith,” Camrie introduced herself.
“So… I’m I supposed to know who you are or something?” the redhead questioned with disinterest.
“No, it’s just, you seemed lonely. I wanted to introduce myself.”
“Well, you’ve don’t that so why are you still here?” the redhead snapped. Camrie looked slight taken aback, but she didn’t move.
“I don’t know,” Camrie answered. “You just look sad.”
“Well I’m not, so get lost,” the girl snarled. Camrie looked shocked, but she figured she’d better little to the girl. She stood and walked away, back over to Ocean.
Ocean watched as Camrie sat down on the sand beside him, her eyes downcast and her usually cheerful demeanor vanished. Concern passed through his blue eyes for a second.
“Camrie…” the small girl, beside him, turned her head away from him, resting the side of it on her knee. Ocean fell silent, not knowing what to say.
“Camrie, you wanna come swimming with us?” Alicia asked as she came over with Bethany and Britt. Camrie glanced up at her before shaking her head no. Immediately, Alicia turned her attention on Ocean. “What did you do to her?” she accused.
“I didn’t…”
“He didn’t do anything,” Camrie said softly, still watching the sand.
“Then what’s wrong?” Alicia questioned. Camrie glanced toward the redhead, still sitting by the water. Alicia followed her gaze. “Okay, what did Amy do?” Ocean watched as Camrie stared wide eyed at Alicia.
“Camrie went to see if she was okay. She just wanted to help her,” Ocean explained softly. “Amy took it the wrong way, and you know how she gets.” Camrie sat with a confused look on her face as she heard the last phrase. How could Alicia know Amy? It was definitely a question she would have to ask later.
Yeah so in this chapter I kinda meant to show how some of the characters acted in the morning. I hope you liked it, and please review and tell me what you thought. Everyone's opinion is important!!!
