In the scarlet solarium

Sits a woman in red

Once she cried for her love

But her tears have all fled

Her love won’t return now

He has bled on the field

Her love won’t return now

For he would not yield

When the army returned

The crowds cheered raucous and proud

But her love he lay dead

And the cheers were befouled

So she painted the glass

Of her once favorite room

So they shone now like blood

And spoke only of doom

She planted there roses

Scarlet of course

And she watered and tended

Fed them her remorse

Nothing could sooth her

And her eyes were cried dry

Nothing could sooth her

All she asked now was why

No children to mourn with

No family with which to cry

She was all alone now

She just wished to die

She would stare at the fountain

All glistening red

And think of her loss

Her beloved dead

Till one day she broke

Couldn’t take one more day

So she lay in the fountain

Till her soul went away

But as the next day came dawning

A man walked into town

His armor was bloody

And boots were worn down

For he had walked day and night

Just to reach home

They had left him behind

With the dead in the loam

The men came a running

And cheered him of course

For he had fought bravely

A man of resource

To see him alive

They could not believe

Then they thought of his wife

What joy she’d receive

He turned away from them

For he wished for his love

They all smiled at him

Sure this gift was from above

But when he did return

To home where he found

Beneath the glass painted red

His love in scarlet had drowned

In the scarlet solarium

Floats a woman in red

Once she cried for her love

But her tears have all fled
