Shades of Grey

Shook me down to the core

The weakness in your arms

As I clutched to you in a tight embrace

Squeezing harder

Begging for a response

Snowflakes dance down from the twilight sky

A flame flickers

Ash from a cigarette

Matches the tone in your voice

You know that I’m here

Practically screaming out your name

But with a shadowy and vacant laugh

One that isn’t your usual

You push me aside

You block me out

The heavy snow piles up

The white hills surround us

Shades of gloom and grey heather

The tears rain down

Like a spirit of the past, you ignore me

Like a repressive memory

For the charm of others

The glory of a fake smile

And the swirling tendrils of a black-breathed death
