Barrier

.

Timid

Hands coming close, then jumping away

Scared they'll get burned

So away they run

Afraid to get in too deep

Already broken.

.

Smiles exchanged

Across the street.

Then to home they go

Grimaces refusing to disappear

Meet up again the next day

Almost kiss

Then look away.

.

Love

Beckoning with warmth

Felt farther than the sun

But they can't come.

Closing their doors

Cause the pain

Inevitably comes

.

Like the sun

It calls to us all

But shadows come with the light.

Just when we get close enough

To feel the peace

Those shadows lurch upward

And destroy

Even the best of us.
