Panic! Airways
Part I: A Message Home
Writing Hello
Walking along the dirt roads, Ali Warlon looked around Way; something seemed different about her hometown. A feeling in her stomach made her want to turn around and head for Adell’s, but she couldn’t.
Ava, her mother, was waiting at home for her. And it was the first time in a month that she’d be able to see her mother again, until she returned back to Way. Being in foreign affairs was a risky business, but when an Airian is a top rank Troller and persuasive talker, there was no choice but go into foreign affairs.
The way of the world, or at least the Airways, was written in stone. Once five of the six continents floated back to each other, like billions of years ago with Pangea, a new world was created, a new set of being.
Antarctica, and the northern pole, stayed in place, frozen in place by ice, stayed solid at the poles. South America (the Fire Kingdom) also broke away from North America (part of the Earth Empire), making one giant country. In that giant nation, a few islands have been left untouched, and those islands are the four Airways.
Way was the eastern Airway, located in, what used to be called, Japan. It’s also known as the Asian-Way. To the north, it’s the frigid cold of AWay, before known as Greenland. Madagascar, or what used to be, swan across the South Atlantic Ocean and that’s the South Airway, or Ai (ie) Way. The final Airway in the oceans was Airs. Airs was the most famous of the Airways because it has formed into something unreal. Alaska broke away from North America and hit California, creating a large mountain range running across Airs. Airs is located between the North and South Pacific Ocean. A few miles off the coast of Airs is the Hawaiian Islands, which haven’t been claimed by any nation and is a worldwide hotspot.
Dragging her feet, Ali stopped once she saw her mother’s hover car un-parked. The blue and grey piece of steel was nowhere in sight, and there was no sign of Ava anywhere.
Rolling her eyes, Ali cursed under her breath and jogged to her home. Placing her finger on the keypad, she heard the house greet her, but she ignored it.
“Ava?” Ali called, walking through the living room. The television was off, and all the automatics were as she left them that morning. “Mom?” she called again, this time making her way through the house and floating up to the second story of the house. Not a single person was home.
“House, call Adell Waxon,” she ordered, falling back to the carpeted floor. Ringing came from inside the house, “Thank you.”
“Hello? Waxon-chan residence,” Ale Waxon, Adell’s father, answered.
Ali rolled her eyes at the man, she wasn’t found of him, “Konichiwa Waxon-chan, is Ade home?”
“Hello Ali,” Ale said dully, he didn’t like her much either, mostly because her mother had rejected him and stole his position in the National Affairs Committee (NAC).
A transfer buzzed in her ears, as the call was relocated to Adell’s room. “Yo, Ali, what?”
“Hey Dell, you want to come over?”
There was a short silence on Dell’s end he was pondering the decision. “Thought Ava was going to come out of NAC today,” he answered.
Once more, Ali rolled her eyes. She threw herself against the couch and blinked twice. A holographic screen popped up a foot away from her face with a bright green envelope flashing in the left hand corner. The purple background was transparent to the large window beside the sofa, but it was covered it all sorts of icons.
“Nope,” Ali said casually. Her sheik orange eyes focused on the letter and it popped over.
“Why didn’t you just mess me?” Dell asked, by now, about to leave his room. Buzzing kept following his voice as he walked room to room.
Her eyes traced over the letters that appeared on the screen and she sighed, “I didn’t want to check my messes. And I can’t send one without checking them,” Ali faked a laugh as she re-read the message.
Ali, sorry but I got caught up in work. Be home is a week – Much love Ava
A heart was next to her name, as if she was trying to show her love for her daughter, but it wasn’t working. Ali knew the truth, and she accepted it. Aik would always be first in Ava’s heart, and first to be visited. Aik was Ali’s older brother who was an Air Ball champion, and better yet, a doctor. He had already cured Airwalk, when you were too sick to Troll or even walk because of the air in the surrounding area, or lack there of (Airians needed oxygen, without it many would die, and with a lack of it, they’d be gone forever, with only a heartbeat and a vegetable body) and ETD. Element Trolling Disarray is when a Troller can’t control a their power and it gets out of control.
“She sent you a mess didn’t she?” By now, he was standing at the door, waiting for the conversation to end so he could walk three blocks down and two blocks over to his best friend’s house. “No vid?”
“What?” Ali shook her head. She wasn’t paying much attention to him. “No-no… it was just a mess.”
“Ight, well Ali, I’ll see you in about five, peace,” a click sounded in the house, Adell had hung up the phone. “Hang up, house,” Ali said blinking twice, closing the screen.
“I’m too cool for a vid, aren’t I, Ava?” Ali rolled her eyes at the mention of her mother’s name and she stood up. Dell would be here in five minutes on his hoverboard, so she had just enough time to make some food.
“Kitchen, make two serving… three servings of sushi, please,” she called from over the couch, knowing how much her friend loved to eat.
Five minutes later, the house pinged and the sushi was complete. “Thank you,” Ali said standing up to open the door, usually Dell would beat her to the door, but he wasn’t here yet, so she won. Fifty-five to two.
Pushing her finger on the pad, Ali’s door opened. “Dell?” she asked, stepping outside, allowing the door to close behind her.
“Good-bye, Ali,” the house said, locking down.
Looking up and down the streets, Ali awaited Dell, but two minutes later he still wasn’t there. She blinked twice, paused and moved her pinkie. The purple screen came up and an empty mess was opened.
“Where are you, Ade?” she said, staring into the screen.
“Don’t call me Ade!” his voice came from the screen, but his face was a blur of black and gray static. “It’s Adell… or Dell… no Ade.”
“Haha, well, where are you at boy?” she asked, still scanning the screen for any sign of his white shaggy hair and bright purple eyes.
“Amy found me…” he whispered. Ali heard the squeak of a woman’s voice in the background that explained the static it was voluntary.
“Ohh,” she giggled, her smile causing the purple screen to grow twice he size. “Hey, stop that,” she wiped the smile off her face, returning the screen to normal.
“Be there—” “So, Saturday is fine with you? Ade?” the woman’s voice asked, it was high and squeaky, leaving your ears wanting a River Front to cleanse your head.
“Umm,” he hesitated, “Just mess me…” Ali twitched her pinkie twice, muting the screen.
A moment later Dell’s face overcame the static and his mouth was moving. Moving her pinkie two more times, his voice returned to his white-headed face. “—Yeah, so I’m turning the corner. Hey, I see you,” the overlapping voice came and Ali blinked twice, closing the conversation vid.
Moving his fingers Dell stopped the hoverboard, and it lowered to the ground. “So, what’s up?” he asked, moving his fingers through his bangs.
“Erm, well—” Ali watched the hoverboard rise, and Dell had no idea with his purple eyes closed. “Your board?”
“What?” Dell opened his eyes and removed his fingers from his head. As soon as the violet orbs looked down the board slipped out from under his feet and he went circling down to the ground. A few inches from the ground, his nose dripped sweat, making a small puddle on the concrete walkway. He was breathing heavy as he flipped himself over.
“Just go breaking the law,” Ali laughed, twisting her fingers where two silver rings were placed. Each hand had two rings, one on each pinkie and one on each index finger.
Straightening himself on solid ground, Dell sighed, “I hate those rings!”
“Still, flying in the middle of Main Way Street?” Ali rolled her eyes grabbing her friend’s wrist and dragging him to the door. She looked both ways and put her finger on the keypad.
“Welcome back, Ali,” the house greeted once more as the two walked in.
“Hi house,” Dell smiled, waving to his favorite house in the city.
“Hello Dell,” the house responded, “We’ve made you sushi.”
“Ight, thanks,” he said, running past Ali’s silver hair and to the kitchen.
“I still think you should wear the rings, it’d make messing a lot easier,” walking up beside him, Ali took a piece of the green and white roll with two fingers and popped it in her mouth. So delicious.
“Blinking a lot isn’t too much of a pain,” Dell laughed, blinking six consecutive times, making a siren go off in Ali’s ears.
