Solace by 'DraganMir'
I
I'm not the best with spoken words,
In fact, I work better with those written.
That is why I am no good with verbal comfort,
I cannot even vocalize the fact I'm smitten.
II
I am not the most adept at noticing changes,
And I am not one to show much emotion.
Sometimes I can feel how others are doing,
Though over myself I raise no commotion.
III
I may pick up on the small things,
Moods and feelings, even when hidden.
But when it comes to asking what's wrong,
My words fail to sooth a soul which is leaden.
IV
I try to provide what comfort I can,
But oft I end up putting my foot in my mouth.
Just when I could use them the most,
Like birds in winter, my words have gone south.
V
I have made every attempt to console a friend,
Even when they say there is nothing I can do.
They don't need to say anything is the matter,
Their actions are mostly what I learn through.
VI
They may not do or say anything obvious,
This alerts my intuition and common sense.
It may not be my business, but I care about them.
I try to see through their protective mental fence.
VII
They do not need to speak to signal a problem,
It can be found in a twitch, or twist of a cup.
I would like to help in any way that I can,
But I couldn't speak clearly, even if they opened up.
VIII
They want to be strong and fight their own battle,
But they should know that it is okay to talk.
An extended arm, and a comforting word,
An independent spirit causes them to baulk.
IX
I just want them to know, through it all,
That I am there for them, a shield and friend.
It is not always necessary to stand tall,
Friends will be there for solace, here 'til the end.
