The One

Chapter Seven

(Roth’s POV)

Corin and Art went through several files, matching up some couples and setting aside others for later review. Meetings were set up, but some couples decided to wait until the dance to meet. I stood up to stretch my legs after a while. I walked over and stood by Corin as she read through another file.

I saw her stiffen as I approached, but she relaxed. I crouched down next to her. She was looking over another file.

There was a knock on the door.

I quickly stepped away from Corin and pressed my back against the wall.

Corin’s mom opened the door and poked her head in. Once again, I thought I saw her eyes flick to me. I brushed the thought away immediately as she came in the room.

“Dinner’s ready, kids.” I noticed that she said “Kids” rather than her usual, “You two.”

I was just overreacting, I told myself. There was no reason to think that she could see me.

Corin stood up and followed her mom out of the room with art trailing behind.

I decided for once not to go with them. Instead, I went outside through the window and placed protection charm that an old witch taught me on the house and returned home.

I collapsed on my bed, feeling the day’s exhaustion sinking in. I just hoped that my spell held until I could return to Corin in the morning.

CORIN

Art stood up from the kitchen table at about nine o’clock, announcing that it was time for him to leave. I walked him to the door. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” I said.

“Pick me up at my place tomorrow, ‘Kay?”

“Okay.” I responded, and shut the door. “And as the door closes, you wonder, what was that face?”

There was a knock on the door. “I can still hear you!” Art called.

“And as the knock sounds, you wonder, was that voice?”

I walked away from the door, said goodnight to my mom and climbed the stairs to my bedroom. I kissed my fingers and pressed them to a picture of my father, the one I never knew. I walked into my bedroom and was disappointed to find that the cool draft was not there to greet me as usual.

Sometimes I wondered what that draft was. I secretly hoped that it maybe was my father, looking after me. The breeze was so comforting. It was like a protective blanket.

I threw myself on my bed and told myself that if it was my dad that was visiting me, then he had to have other things to do besides watch me all day and night. I rolled over and thought of Roth. Who was he going to ask to the dance? Well, I could rule out the lip gloss-zombies, considering how he acted towards them earlier. Perhaps one of the skater-girls, or a library-crawler. His personality suggests that he might like someone quiet, who stayed under the radar.

Maybe he’d ask Maya Bell Jones. She was often in a corner of the cafeteria, reading a book. She was pretty, with long, straight red hair and sparkling blue eyes. She wore plain clothes and glasses, but looked good in them. She seemed to be a good match for him. If he ever came into my service for a match, I’d set the two of them up.

I woke up the next morning to the sound of my mom blasting from my laptop. I rolled over.

“Mom! Isn’t it a little early for that?” I complained.

“No. It’s nearly seven. If you don’t hurry, you’ll be late.”

I bolted upright. “Nearly seven?!”

I shot out of bed and ran to my bathroom. Mom had already put clothes out for me on the counter. I shouted a thanks to her as I tore a brush through my hair. I threw on the clothes and brushed my teeth as quickly and thoroughly as I could. I snatched my backpack and began shoving papers in, smiling a little to myself when the cool breeze touched my hands as I worked, slowing them slightly.

I ran downstairs and into the kitchen where mom handed my breakfast to me in a Styrofoam box with a fork.

“Thanks, mom. I’ve gotta run.” I said hurriedly. “See you later!”

“Bye!” She shouted as I rushed out the door.

ROTH

Corin was adorable whenshe was in a rush. I’d tried to slow her down a little up in her bedroom, because as I sat on the console of her car as she pulled out of her driveway, she was early.

When she pulled into Art’s driveway, she still had ten minutes to spare. She pulled out the Styrofoam box her mom had given her and begann to eat. She was neary done when Art’s mom came out to ask her if she wanted any toast.

Art’s mom was the classic Italian Mother. She always wanted to make sure everyone was well fed. Corin politely declined, but accepted the invitation inside.

I didn’t follow her, but rather took the opportunity to return to my own house to retrive my car. I removed the myst as I drove to school, contemplating what I was planning to do…
