Never Forget

Prologue

-

One of the most common flaws in the human race is forgetfulness. Whether it be forgetting to put the toilet seat down, or forgetting to buy socks even though you see every morning that your drawer is filled with defected foot warming gear, it is simply just a part of everyday life.

So is your best friend forgetting that you aren’t a morning person.

(But that’s beside the point.)

The chance of loosing all or almost all your memory is possible with a quick fall down the stairs, or by a simple car accident. Either the memory just before the accident is lost, or the identity of your being is gone. (Or maybe even something in between.) Imagine waking up, with absolutely no knowledge of anything, to faces of obvious concern and fear—but not familiarity.

Amnesia is the state of partial or total loss of memory; caused by brain injury or illness and characterized by an inability to form new long-term memories or to remember earlier ones.

How small that definition seems when compared to the actual state, the state of having little to no memory. The state of which is far beyond just simple forgetfulness.

Sometimes you loose your memory because your subconscious mind is purposefully preventing certain events and knowledge from showing itself, in a form of self-protection or survival instinct, rendering you unable and unknowing of possible critical information. But protection from what? You can only question, but not remember. But maybe you’ll come by things, big or small, that trigger the stowed-away memories. Reminders that will offer familiarity to the hidden memories, tell them that it’s okay and bring them forward. Whether or not they would be pleasant is almost anyone’s guess, but better be in the know then not, right?

So many mind-boggling cases of amnesia drive doctors up the wall, doing five diagnostic tests in a row but still not have the slightest idea of the cause or treatment, let alone what explanation to give to the patient. They send you to therapy, to try and revive your memories but to no success. Could words and exercises really bring out the hidden memories, ones that your mind seemingly try so hard to hide, to put away until the time is right or for forever?

The idea of being in the dark of something that must have so big—enough to send your mind into code red—and so extreme that your memory is cleansed every five years like a bugged hard drive of a new computer, is frightening. But maybe it’s for a reason.

Perhaps, along the way of searching for the missing pieces, you’ll find that one piece. The one, having been under your nose the entire time, you realize is all you need. The one piece that actually turns out to be the last piece of the puzzle, finally showing you the big picture. The one that without your insane case of amnesia, you probably never would have found.

(Because why would you look for something when you already knew where it was?)

But by then, the events that your mind had kept from you would only matter little, being far more content and thankful for just that one piece, the one that completed the puzzle.

The one that helped you recover.

The one you later lost.

The one you will always remember and,

Never forget.”

I know! How terrible and cruel of me to start something new while I'm supposed to be rewriting! I apologize, but I am having major issues with rewriting Unexpected Places, and it's quite frustrating.

This is only the prologue, so please tell me if you're interested! Drop a review and add to your alerts :D

Until next time.. xxo
