Day After: Ties Forgotten

Castor sat in a café sipping an overly sweet cappuccino as his boss rambled on the other end of the cell phone pushed up against the side of his face. He stared tiredly at a manila folder sitting innocuously in front of him and he listened to his boss only when he realized he was near the end of his speech.

“—And good work yesterday,” said his boss. “Who knows what would have happened if that boy was able to do as he planned. I’m lucky I stuck you in that family—Donnelli, was it?—when I recognized the boy. I don’t know what I’d do without you. Too bad you’re not my Sôus la Tête (1).”

“Too bad indeed,” said Castor. He really did not care whether he was the man’s Underboss. He only wanted his pay. There was a knock on the café window and Castor turned to notice a beautiful blonde standing outside waving at him. Castor waved back. “Listen—I’m sorry to interrupt you boss, but I need to go. My date’s here.”

The two men bid their farewells and Castor quickly paid and left the café. Outside, he met with his date, Jovana Donnelli—daughter of the Donnelli family’s boss—and never thought again about the three days spent with Lionel trying to find Alexandre.

(1) French equivalent to a Capo Bastone, or "Underboss"
