The keys laid on the counter, untouched since the night before. Their lonely silver gleam danced along the backsplash from the sunlight streaming in through the window.

“What am I going to do?” I asked myself as I lay in bed, “How am I going to get through this?”

I sat up, bad idea. My head started spinning and the aches ensued.

“Ugh.” I grumbled, I should’ve known this would happen.

He stirred, his arm groping the area I had just been laying in. Sleepily, he rolled over.

“Baby, where you going?” he mumbled, groggily.

“I have to go to work today; Anne is going to hate me. This is the third time this week I’ve gone in with a hangover. I grumbled, “Bring me lunch today, and while you’re there, flirt with Anne. She only puts up with me because of you.”

“It’s not my fault you’re a lightweight.” He said, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me closer, “Come back to bed, I’ll call you in sick, Anne loves me, remember?” he smiled into the skin of my shoulder and lightly kissed me there.

I groaned, “Love, you know I can’t do that. I don’t have it in me to skip work, what are you trying to do, turn me into you?” I lay down and kissed his forehead.

He smiled, “Seems like I’ve won.”

He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me to him. I unfolded my arms from in front of me and snaked them through his arms so that we were holding each other.

“Jenny, you know I love you” he kissed my cheek, “right?” he kissed the curve of my jaw, “You know that I’d” he kissed my neck, “Never do anything to hurt you,” he kissed my collarbone, “right?” He kissed the joining of my collar bones.

Each kiss was like a shot of morphine, “Mmhmm.” I agreed.

“Then why don’t we get married.” He whispered into my ear.

I froze, “I’m sorry…what? What did you say?”

“I want to marry you Jen. You’re the one.” He said, moving to kiss me on the lips.

I sat back up again, fighting the dizziness, “Uh, I –I have to go. I’m gonna be late. I have to get to work.”

I jumped up from the bed and grabbed my jeans from off the floor and pulled them on.

“Baby, I love you.” He said, begging me to stay.

“Have you seen my shirt?” I asked, frantically searching for my ticket out of this awkward situation, “I can’t find it. Shit! I’m gonna be late!”

“It’s in the corner by your shoes.” He replied, sounding disheartened.

I smiled at him, “Thanks babe.” I walked over to him and kissed him on the cheek, “I’ll see you at lunch.”

I walked over to the corner and pulled on my t-shirt. I bent down and grabbed my shoes, “Bye babe, I’ll see you in a few hours.”

I walked over to the counter, my bare feet cold against the linoleum floor. I grabbed the keys and dashed out the door. As I walked down the stairs to our second floor apartment, I replayed the scene in my head. When I got to the bottom of the stairs, I stopped. Pulling on my shoes, I realized that Bryan was everything any girl would want. And here I was …scared, scared to trust him, when he’s given me no reason not to. I am crazy. When I finished pulling on my shoes, I walked over to my green Toyota Camry, opened the door, and got in.

I strapped on my seatbelt, turned on the car, and pulled out of my spot. I took in a deep breath, In all honesty, I didn’t have to be at work for another hour or so, but I had a few things to deal with first.

I drove as far away from the apartment as I could. I needed to distance myself from anyone who could call up Bryan and tell him where I was. I pulled into a parking spot at the closest CVS I could find. I turned off the car, got out, and locked it. Taking a deep breath, I walked towards the door.

As I walked in, I immediately had a sense of embarrassment overcome me.

“Get in, buy it, use it, get out.” I told myself.

I roamed around the aisles till I found what I was looking for. I grabbed the first one I could get my hands on and walked to the closest register.

“That’ll be $24.99.” the lady behind the counter said, eyeing me suspiciously.

I threw the money at her and asked where the bathroom was.

“In the back, next to the pampers.” She said pointedly.

Bitch. I walked to the back of the store, hands shaking, and into the bathroom. I opened the box, and pulled out its contents. I pulled off my pants and sat down on the toilet. Here goes nothing.

After a few minutes of waiting, I looked at the test. It said one word. Pregnant.
