Soulmate
PART ONE
(Skye’s POV)
Jake and I had been dating for a year and a half then. We were sixteen-Well, I was sixteen. He was actually a little over three hundred-- so that really had to be some kind of record. Jake was perfect for me; he was a sweet, sensitive musician (He played guitar and he could sing and he played cello and piano!) who had a kind heart and he was a Goth, like me. Oh, and just a few months ago, I discovered that he was a vampire. He didn’t prey on innocent girls in the dead of night, though. He had connections with the blood bank and he ate a lot of raw meat.
He was also really into the Night World books, and believed that we were “soulmates,” or the only other soul we belonged with. Being without a soulmate was like missing your other half. Which was how I felt about Jake. Exactly.
Jake was also unbelievably handsome. He had chin length, black hair, mostly green hazel eyes with rings of brown and gray around his pupils and thick black eyelashes on snow white skin.
Jake had gotten us into this under ground teen club the night it happened. He, my best friend Ana, her boyfriend/werewolf Rob, and I were double dating that night.
We sat in the VIP section in one big booth. Ana and Rob had gone out to dance, leaving Jake and I alone for a while. We spent a little bit just kissing and cuddling and messing around.
“Come on, Skye.” He nudged me a little, “let’s dance.”
I nodded and took his hand. We weaved through the crowd and began to dance to Kryptonite by 3Doors Down. We danced for a really long time together. We laughed and showed off with each other. It was so much fun.
That is, until a tall, skinny girl with long wavy blonde hair and a skirt that must have been three sizes too small for her stepped in between us.
I lost sight of Jake.
“Jake!” I called over the music. “Jake, where are you?”
“I’m over here!” I heard him say over the music and shouting people. “Skye, Where are you?”
This was one of the best things about being Jake’s soulmate. If I were looking for it, I could hear his voice over the loudest of noises, including a club full of people and too-loud music.
I looked around to figure our where I was. “I’m just under the giant Black Widow hanging from the ceiling!”
“Hang on! I’ll be right there!” He said.
But suddenly, I felt a set of hands pull me back to a cluster of tables on the opposite side of the club from our table in VIP.
“Hey, babe.” The guy who had grabbed me said, looking me over. “What’s your name?” he placed a hand on my right arm.
“None of your business.” I snapped, slapping him off.
He chuckled. “You’re feisty. And very sexy…” His eyes darkened with lust. “Why don’t you come with me for a little while. I promise I won’t bite.” He chuckled and grabbed me by the arm. This time when I tried to get loose, I couldn’t.
“Get off of me!” I Cried.
“Oh, come on, baby.”
He leaned in and secured both of my hands in front of me at chest level. I struggled to get free, but he was too strong. I cried out in pain as he tightened his grip. His breath smelled of alcohol and cigarettes. He let go of my hands with one hand, but then secured both of my wrists in his other. He grabbed my chin and turned me towards him.
Then, he kissed me.
(Jake’s POV)
When the blonde haired girl stepped in front of me, I lost sight of Skye.
“Jake!” I heard her call, “Jake, Where are you?”
I breathed a sigh of relief. I was so glad I hadn’t lost her.
“I’m over here!” I replied. “Skye, Where are you?”
“I’m just under the Giant Black Widow hanging from the ceiling.”
I pinpointed her location. Just ahead.
“Hang on, I’ll be right there!”
I dodged past several people as I headed for Skye. But when I got to where Skye had been, she was gone.
“Skye!” I called.
No answer.
I was suddenly filled with panic. Skye was gone!
Something might have happened to her! I had to find her!
I closed my eyes and focused with everything I had, searching for her voice.
“Aaaah!” I heard her cry.
‘No!’ I thought, ‘She’s hurt!’
I ran towards her voice.
I was only a few feet away when I saw it.
She was kissing another guy! He felt very familiar, but I couldn't place him.
That cry I’d heard had not been one of pain. It had been one of pleasure.
A wave of emotions swept through me. Pain. Shock. Sorrow. Anger. More pain.
“Skye…” I whispered.
Suddenly, their kiss broke off. Her wide, silver eyes turned to me.
“Jake!” She was about to come forward, but I held up my hand and she stopped dead in her tracks.
“Skye…” I stepped forward just a little bit. “Why?”
“Jake,
it’s not what you think! I-”
“Stop, Skye! I can’t believe
it! And all this time, I thought you really loved me. I thought you
were my Soulmate.” I laughed without humor. “I was so stupid.
Soulmates. Yeah, I guess it was pretty stupid. I should have known
that it was just something I could read about.” I shook my head.
“But you won’t have to deal with me any more. Goodbye, Skye.”
I turned away and let the tears that I’d been holding in fall.
“Jake!” She called. “Jake, wait! Jake!”
I tuned her out. I couldn’t hear her voice. It would just make it all worse.
(Ana POV)
I had been dancing with Rob when I heard Skye cry out Jake’s name in agony.
As her best friend, I knew her voice so well I could decipher her emotions even over the blaring music.
I told Rob that I’d meet him at the table.
I made my way through the crowd and saw Skye being held by a guy I had never seen before. I could see the panic in her eyes. She struggled to break free of his grip, but he jerked her back.
“Jake! It’s not what you think!” She cried hysterically.
I looked to Jake who was standing several feet away from them. There were obviously tears forming in his eyes.
“Stop, Skye!” He shouted, “I can’t believe it! And all this time, I thought you really loved me. I thought you were my Soulmate.”
I recognized the term. The two of them always said that they were made for each other. That with out one, the other was incomplete. Soulmates.
I saw the way Skye jerked back, like she had been slapped.
He laughed without humor. “I was so stupid. Soulmates. Yeah, I guess it was pretty stupid. I should have known that it was just something I could read about.” He shook His head. “But you won’t have to deal with me any more. Goodbye, Skye.”
I watched as he turned and walked away.
“Jake!” She Called, tears suddenly streamed down her cheeks. “Jake, wait!” She jerked forward, “Jake!”
“Forget him, baby.” The man holding her back said seductively. “He’s nobody. Come with me. I can make the hurt go away.”
“Make it go away?” She shouted. “You Creep! You caused all of this! Just because you wanted some sex! Let go of me!” She gave him her best I’ll-Kick-You-In-The-Balls-So-Hard-That-You-Get-A-Vagina Kick.
He howled in pain and released her wrists to hold his aching groin.
‘Looks like it worked.’ I thought.
“Skye!” I shouted as I ran towards her.
“Ana!” She hiccupped. “Jake- He- I- I- I-”
“I know, hon. I saw. But you have to calm down.”
“B-but, Ana, Do you realize what that must have looked like to him? Did you hear what he said? I have to fix this!”
I was about to stop her, but she had already run off.
“Oh boy.”
(Skye’s POV)
I ran as quickly as I could to the back lot of the club to where Jake’s car was parked.
“Jake!” I called. “Jake, please!”
“What do you want?” He said flatly. He stood near his black Ferrari, his eyelashes slightly wet with tears.
“Jake, please, just let me explain!”
He shook his head. “What is there to explain, Skye? What, are you going to say that he came onto you? Is that what happened? Because, right now, Skye, I don’t think I could believe any thing you say.” He shook his head.
“But that is what happened! Jake, please just let me-”
“No, Skye! I can’t! I gave you everything! I gave you my heart! I gave you my soul! I gave you everything I have! I even gave you the one secret that no one else knows! Then you just go and throw it all away! You were everything to me, but now… Now I never want to see you again!”
His words stabbed through me like a knife.
He got into his car, slammed the door shut, and drove off.
“I’m sorry.”
She fell to her knees and let herself go.
Part two
(Jake’s POV)
As I drove home from the club, I was glad that there was no one there waiting for me. I needed to be alone.
Skye.
My heart ached at the thought of her.
I really thought that she loved me.
I thought that we were Soulmates. I thought that we were specifically designed for each other. I thought I’d found someone that I would have given an eternity to.
But I was wrong.
‘This is what I get for reading all of those romance novels.’ I thought. ‘All it did was give me false hope that maybe, just maybe, there was someone out there who would accept me for who I was. Someone who could see past the coffin and fangs and really, truly accept me.
Skye.
Suddenly, I remembered her laugh. It was so bubbly and care-free. That was what had drawn him to her in the beginning. That and her smile. She was beautiful when she smiled. It was so warm and gentle. She was so delicate and beautiful. She used to act tough and mean to prevent people from thinking she was weak. The truth was, it probably wasn’t acting.
‘I still love her.’ I realized with a stab of pain.
(Skye’s POV)
“I’ll be back in an hour.” Ana said, giving my hand a squeeze.
She dropped me off at my house and, knowing that I couldn’t be alone, promised to spend the night with me.
My hands shook as I unlocked the door. It wasn’t until I was inside that I realized that tears were pouring from my eyes.
“Honey?” My mom said frantically, “Honey, what’s wrong?”
She rushed over to me and wrapped her arms around me. “Skye, did something happen?”
“I-Its J-J-Jake!” I cried in between sobs.
“What happened?”
“There w-was a b-big a-accident! A-a m-mis-stake! H-he said he n-never w-wanted to s-see me ag-gain!”
My mom gasped. “What?!”
I
sat down with her on the couch and told her what happened, leaving
out the parts about Soulmates.
“He thought that I was cheating
on him.” I said, taking a shakey breath. I knew that another round
of tears were threatening to attack me.
“Oh, honey.” Mom said, pulling me into a hug. “Do you want me to try talking to him?”
“No. He would think I told you a lie. He hates me. I know he does.”
“He can’t hate you. Skye, he adores you. What I see when I watch him around you is a boy in love. His love for you goes way beyond any normal teenage relationship.”
“Not any more.” I replied, shaking my head. “He meant what he said. I know he did.”
“I think he was just upset. Maybe you should give him a little time. Then you can explain to him what really happened.”
“Okay, mom. Thanks.”
“What time will Ana be over?”
“I few minutes, I guess.”
“I’ll go make some hot Chocolate.” She gave me one more hug and whispered, “It’s going to be alright.”
