Title: Gourmet

Author: Salamander Erg

Summary: A girl tries to tell her older sister about her cooking class, but the other is not paying attention.

Just an extra bit of info to avoid confusion:

‘Blah’ is internal dialogue.

“Blah” is spoken dialogue.

Date written: March 4, 2009

Eleanor was half paying attention as her sister prattled on and on about what she had done in her cooking class at school.

“And we even got to make grilled chicken on a real grill! It was so gross, ‘cause we had to touch it when it was raw and now I know why you hate tenderizing the chicken. It’s really disgusting!”

‘Do I have a paper due on Monday, or Wednesday? What’s the paper even supposed to be about? Have I started it yet?’

Eleanor slipped into her own thoughts, Erica’s voice becoming background noise.

“…It got all over me and Puja ‘cause she was standing next to me, but she didn’t get mad, she just laughed…”

‘No, if I don’t even know what the paper is about, I probably haven’t started it yet. That sucks; I wish I had the Clapper, except instead of the light turning on, an essay would appear. Or one of those ‘That Was Easy’ buttons. Or if essays just dropped out of the sky. Yeah…’

“Then you have to mix the cheese and the, um, the other stuff until it’s kinda mixed up, it was really hard…”

Her attention floated in and out while Erica detailed what she did when she was making the manicotti. Something about stuffing spinach and goopy cheese into a noodle did not sound very appealing.

‘I hope it doesn’t have to MLA format.”

“And we learned how to make meatloaf (except we didn’t make it like mom makes it) and we made cinnamon rolls (and they were so good) and then we made pizza (but it was lame ‘cause we only put cheese on it)...”

‘MLA format kicks my ass.’

“And now I have to make something for dinner tonight!”

Eleanor perked up at this, she was starving.

“What are you gonna make?”

“Oatmeal.”
