Desperation Burns

She’s drowning in a mixture of oxygen and cigarettes
with just a hint of desperation poured freely from plastic cups.
Eager mouths search for enlightenment but finding none,
settle for the illusions of wasted youth. Crowded dance
floors offer the perfect combination of sweat and anonymity.
Pressed up against faceless bodies, blood thaws and flows freely
from wounded hearts searching for a release only to settle for
a life of one night stands and a growing list of regrets.

She’s spinning out of control, looking for the emergency exit
as the music ignites her paper-thin soul:
“That's the danger in starting a fire,
you never know how many bridges you'll burn.”

Author's Note: the last two lines are from the song The Danger in Starting A Fire, by A Day To Remember
