The Edge

I stood at the top of the mountain looking down a waterfall, watching the rushing water drop into the vast pond beneath. I saw people swimming the pool of water that lead to where it dropped down – having fun, but also knowing that they could easily slip and fall down…

I felt his presence next to me, his warm breath causing my skin to tingle and his cold body telling me a different story.

I'm willing to try this,
But maybe you're not
And maybe we'll like it –
Let's give it a shot.

"Why not?" I asked him, longing for an intertwined future. "What's wrong with me?"

"Nothing," he replied in his deep voice.

My eyesight got blurry as water brimmed at my eyelashes. I tried to blink them away, but all that did was cause them to overflow.

I stripped off my tee-shirt, revealing my bare chest, and pulled off my shoes and socks.

"Sky, what are you doing?" He asked my worriedly.

"You don't care, remember?" I replied coldly. I walked over to the water basin. It wasn't that deep.

But let's throw ourselves in
And get soaking wet,
Don't just dip our toes in
Not yet

"I do care," Jayden replied, jumping in after me. He tugged at my arm as I leaned closer to the waterfall. "I just think that we're not right for each other."

"But, we are right for each other," I replied. Of course we were. I needed him. So bad.

"How can you be sure?" Jayden asked.

"How can you not?" I replied. I felt the current push me towards the edge. Jayden's grip on me loosened for a second before he realized that I was slipping.

"Come on Sky, let's get out of the water."

I reluctantly followed Jayden out of the water. He gently wrapped my towel around me and dried my upper body.

"Thanks," I mumbled.

"No problem," his face darkened, quickly he smiled at me and dried himself off, returning my towel so that I could get comfortable.

"Please Jayden," I said. He tried to interrupt me, but I shushed him, "you may not love me the way I love you, but I'm willing to die for you. I'm willing to give everything up to be with you. No, don't talk-I'm not done yet." Jayden looked like he was about to burst. Seeing him restrain himself, I finished, "and I'm willing to tell you everything that you want to know. I hope you realize that I'm being real with you. I'm being real when no one else was."

The thoughts in my mind

The ropes that I've tied

"Oh," Jayden replied. He sat down on the rock. "That's really how you feel about me?" He sounded: astonished, nervous, happy. You pick.

"Yes," I said. I sat down next to him, gazing at the water as it transitioned from peaceful to ignorant.

He put his arm around me, forgetting that others were their, either fooling around in the water, or watching us. I heard a few of them snicker. "I didn't know what you really felt about me," he said, "I was scared…" He took a moment to think. "I was scared that your feelings for me were partial." I looked at him, and he quickly added, "I now know that their not."

"Do I have all of you?" I asked, being cautious.

"I don't know," he admitted. No longer was his arm around me, "I think so."

"Jayden," I whispered, "I want you, and I want all of you. Not a quarter, not a third, not even a half. All of you. Can I ask that of you?" My one moment of strength was now fading, "Can I ask for all of you?"

"I think…" he paused, working his mind around what I just said, "I think that I would very much like to share all of myself with you." He laughed to himself. "Sky, if I'm giving all of myself to you I want all of you in return." He raised his eyebrows.

I looked him in the eyes, and my stomach fluttered, it was probably my heart that made me say yes, because I wasn't thinking when I leaned over and kissed him. (Some gagging noises were heard.)

"Good," he said, breaking the kiss, "because now I can confess something."

"Uh-oh," I thought aloud.

His eyes widened in shock. "No, no, it's nothing like that," he said. "I just wanted to say that now that we have quote-on-quote committed I can say cheesy things (not that none of this so far hasn't been cheesy…cause it has)." I groaned. "I'm going to tell you that I love you and will love you to the day I die."

So shatter my world
Don't matter now

You're right," I said, "that was really cheesy." He stuck his tongue out and smiled. His arms were back around me.

You're gonna be adored
By me…

"What do you want to do?" Jatden asked me.

"Stay like this forever," I was so comfortable here, in his arms.

"Besides that," he replied.

"Let's swim," I replied. He gave me a look that said something along the lines of, "are you serious?", so I added, "and keep a safe distance from the edge."

"OK."

For one last time water surrounded our bodies, and for once in my life I felt truly happy. I didn't care if the others wanted to ridicule me, let them be who they are, but let me be who I am.

At least give me that.

Jayden wrapped his arms around me, and kissed my neck. I lost my bearings and slipped, bringing Jayden with me.

Gently, as gentle as Jayden's kisses, the water pushed us over the edge.
