The Fox Who Thought Twice
Sara Bogle
Period 2 HLA
There was once a fox, a young fox that was used to getting everything his way.
“Feed me now.” The fox would say and the mother would drop what she was doing and go feed her kit.
Now the mother knew that spoiling her kit was wrong but she just couldn’t help herself, the kit was just so cute! As the kit grew older the mother tried to teach him how to be a proper fox. This would have worked but all the kit wanted to do was play all the time.
Soon the mother had to go away to work and left the kit with a nanny. The kit’s nanny was not as nice as the kit’s mother and the poor kit got mad.
“You can’t tell me what to do!” shouted the kit, “Mommy lets me do whatever I want!”
But the nanny was stubborn and told the kit that he had to eat his greens for dinner.
“You’ll get sick and weak if you don’t eat them.” The nanny said.
“I’ll eat them later then.” Said the young fox, and he trotted off to play.
Later that day the nanny tried to get the kit to eat his greens again, once again the kit said, “I’ll eat them later. It was dark and the kit hadn’t eaten anything all day and he was very hungry, but he would not eat his greens.
“I don’t like greens, their so gross!” said the kit as the nanny tried to get him to eat them once more. But finally the nanny had had enough.
“Fine!” she said, “Don’t eat your greens! But when you wake up in the morning feeling sick, don’t blame me!” and with that she sent the kit to bed.
After the kit got sent to be the mother came home and asked the nanny how it had gone.
“Terrible.” The nanny said, “He didn’t want to eat his greens so I sent him to bed without anything.” Said the nanny again.
After the nanny had left and the mother gone to sleep the kit lay tossing and turning all night, unable to sleep peacefully. Even when he was dreaming he could still feel the growl of his stomach.
The next morning the kit woke early and hungry, but when he asked his mother what there was to eat he got a terrible answer, greens. The same greens that that awful nanny had tried to give him, but the poor kit had no choice, he would surely faint if he didn’t eat soon.
As the starving kit ate his first bite of greens he had expected something fowl and disgusting to enter his mouth, instead he found something very good. Because the kit had always been given what he wanted he had never eaten real food, only candy and sweets. Fruit tasted wonderful on his mouth mushrooms and grasses were delicious too.
Slowly but surely the young kit turned to young fox, changing his habits too. By the time he was an adult he had hobbies like learning new and different types of food, teaching younger kits witch mushrooms to stay away from and so on.
Try something before you decide that you don’t like it; you might find out that you actually do like it.
