Don't Work Nights

Eyes won't shut,
the sun won't dim.
Mind won't stop,
thoughts pouring in.

Blades of light
dance on the bed,
from a ceiling fan
making endless wind.

Curtains shake,
swinging back and forth,
wall clocks tick,
hands pointing north.

A floorboard creaks,
a car zooms past,
a group of kids,
walking by, share laughs.

The playlist ends,
I check the clock,
in a few short hours
these alarms will go off.

Kick off covers, just to
pull them back up;
rearrange the pillows,
still I'm having no luck.

Time creeps by,
then jumps ahead.
Inconsistent and erradic
there's no way for me to win.

Finally admit defeat,
sitting up, reach for the phone;
I hope that faking sick
will bring sleep of my own.
