Crooked Ties and City Minds

Alec almost sighed in content, the cup of coffee he was holding was hot and soothing compared to the cold weather outside of the café. His cheeks and nose were still a rosy colour from the blistering dry wind. However the warmth and rich smell that wafted from his drink and the heated shop was comforting. Even the small amount of customers and the quiet atmosphere within the quaint café reminded him of home.

Finishing the last of his drink Alec returned the mug and gathered up his things. Slipping on his coat and sliding the strap of his laptop case over his shoulder, he left. Shivering slightly due to the change in temperature, Alec trudged through the flattened snow on the sidewalk.

Winding through the dispersed throng of people he moved forward towards a major intersection. Alec gazed ahead. He squinted, an adolescent was in the middle of crossing the street, but the crossing lights did not signal to walk. What the hell?

His eyes darted frantically at the stoplights, it flashed to green. “Fuck,” Alec did not know why he dropped his bag with his precious laptop in it, or why he started running towards the man. These stupid teenagers were always jaywalking but Alec knew for a fact that they would probably make sure a car was not heading their way.

The teenager was clueless to the fact that a red Honda truck was close to sending him in the air. Alec huffed, his breath was becoming shallow. The truck was coming closer and it did not look like it was about to stop anytime soon. Was he the only the one seeing this?

Pushing forward he leaped at the crosswalk, wrapping his arms around the teenager's waist they hurtled forward. Alec hissed. He was too late. Pain started to throb immensely throughout his back, his head was swimming. The last thing he heard was faint yells. He tightened his grip, the guy was still in his arms.

Knowing that he took the brunt of the impact, he stopped trying to stay conscious. Soon enough his blurry vision turned to black.

“How are you feeling?”

Alec groaned. His eyelids fluttered open and amidst the all the electronics he was hooked up to and the bland room, a teenage boy in black attire was seated at the side of his bed. He figured it was the guy he saved.

A rather large piece of gauze was taped onto the boy's temple with a band-aid. It was still visible underneath the dark fringe of his hair. Aside from that, the only visible scars were a few scraps below the emerald coloured eyes on the boy's left cheek.

Alec mustered up some strength and muttered, “Like someone ran me over,” He froze for a second, it did not happen like that exactly, but he did get hit.

He shifted slightly so he could sit up straight against the flat, moth-eaten pillow behind him.

“Judging by the lack of wounds you have, I'm guessing you're alright?” Alec probed after brushing back his blond hair from his eyes. “Uhm - ”

The younger of the two answered in a rough voice, “My name is Damon, and I'm quite alright and you are?”

“Alec Floros,” The blond uttered.

“Thank you,”

There was a pregnant pause, not that it was an awkward silence rather it was calming in a way. Besides there was not much to say to each other, they were not friends and Alec was not fond of small talk. Looking at Damon, he figured the brunet would not want to converse anyways.

He even wondered why the young man was still here in the hospital. Of course there was the notion of thanking him for saving his life but Damon had already done that. There was not any further reason to stay. However minutes passed. The brunet and the blond basked in the silence and in each other’s presence. The odd beep of the machine would go off but no one uttered a thing until the door to the room opened revealing a blonde nurse.

She gave an iron smile, shifting the clipboard from under her arm. “I’m sorry sir but visitor’s hours are over.”

Damon nodded before glancing at Alec for a moment. It seemed as if he was going to say something but he quickly turned around and made his way out the door.

Once Damon was gone, the nurse filed in. She picked up the clipboard from the shelf against the wall and gave it a once over.

“Well Mr. Floros it’s getting late and you need your rest.” Alec nodded and eased back against the pillows. Pulling the blanket over his waist and under his chin he closed his eyes and the last thing he heard was the small click of the door closing when the nurse left the room.

Author's Note: The idea for this story was cooped up in my head for too long. Since it's March Break I finally have time to write this thing. It's always nice to have suggestions and a compliment or two doesn't hurt. So please review!! I'll start writing the second chapter once I get at least 5 reviews. -Hands out cookies-
