I'm with Stupid, Yeah I Wish
I'm standing here but you don't see me. I'd give it all for that to change...
I screamed. Really loud. Kyle had clamped his hands over his ears beforehand, knowing what my reaction would be. No one else in the room was as lucky, they sure got an earful. After my screams died down I turned to Kyle who, let me tell you, had the stupidest little smirk set upon his face. He will pay.
"I...but uh...he..you uh gug ah!" I blubbered like a fool. His smile just grew and I knew that everyone else in the room was watching us. I hated the spotlight, being the center of attention. It's no wonder that I forgot my own birthday, I didn't want to deal with all of the attention that comes on your 18th birthday.
"So Bridge? What's first, the pinata or the cake?" Was he trying to drive me insane?! An idea sparked in my head and I just had to laugh out loud, it was too evil, even for me.
"Pinata." I declared with an evil gleam in my eyes. Kyle's eyebrows furrowed and he looked wary, he must've spotted the glint in my eyes. Grabbing the attention of the people gathered in the living room, which I hated to do, I said loudly and pretty convincingly,
"Thank you all so much for coming! It means a lot to me that you're all here," Truthfully it did. I was leaving in almost two weeks and wouldn't see all of my friends and family for nearly 3 months. "Let the party begin! Kyle hand me the damn bat." Kyle had exited the room while I was speaking to retrieve the ancient baseball bat from the garage. Oh how fun this was going to be. He came towards me and handed me the long, slender piece of wood. He then grabbed me by the shoulders and spun me so I was facing away from him.
"Oh baby." I said. I could hear him chuckle from behind me. He reached in front of my eyes to tie one of my many scarves around my head. My heartbeat picked up its tempo from being so close to its desire. Wow, that was corny.
"Ready Bridge? Kyle asked me, I could hear the smile in his voice.
"As I'll ever be." I was still smiling as Kyle's hands perched on my waist. And then we began to spin. Everyone in the room was laughing as they counted our turns.
"One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten!" They're voices chorused, getting louder and louder with each number.
By this time I was dizzy as hell and I'm sure Kyle was too. We stopped spinning and Kyle placed me down. I wobbled on my feet a bit before quickly gaining my balance, quicker than Kyle. While he was still standing close I swung the bat out in his general direction. It made impact with something solid.
I smiled as I peeled off my blindfold. What I saw was just a bit of a shock. I mean I hadn't hit him that hard. Kyle had somehow fallen to the floor without a sound. Ah crap, I might have just given him another concussion.
"Bridget Annette Elizabeth Carlson!" My mother screeched. She should know by now how Kyle and I act.
"Yeah, yeah I know. I'm not s'posed to hit boys, people in general, especially not with a baseball bat..blah blah blah." I walked the two steps to Kyle's side and before I could lean down to see if he was alright something grabbed my ankle and pulled it out from under me. I toppled down on top of Kyle and started laughing. That idiot.
"Smart move deuche bag." I spat out between fits of laughter as I rolled off of his toned body.
"Ugh," he groaned, "we are definitely not playing Pin the Tail on the Donkey now."
I laughed so hard after hearing that, I felt like my sides were splitting open. And then I remembered that everyone was still in the room. Aw crap. I looked around and almost everyone was looking between me and Kyle with amusement apparent in their eyes. At least I didn't have their full attention.
Kyle got up without difficulty and grabbed my hand while spinning me against his chest. We stood that way for a bit but then the traitor just had to call out those horrible words.
"Cake and presents!" Someone was excited. I wonder what he's planning in that simple mind of his. Nah, Kyle's actually pretty damn smart, he got accepted to UCLA so that just goes to show how much information he can recall and reiterate.
Kyle and I headed for the dining room where the cake and my gifts were located. When we entered the room I couldn't help but think Holy shit. I must have said it out loud to because Kyle chuckled beside me. There were a ton of wrapped boxes with bows atop them scattered around the small room. But the most amazing thing of all was the cake sitting in the middle of the table. It was huge, as in bigger than your average wedding cake. I love icing and this thing had tons of it in millions of colors.
"I think I love you." I said to aloud.
"Well that's very flattering Bridge my dear." He said with a British accent, random much?
"Not you dimwit, the cake!" i meant what I said, had been speaking of the cake a moment before.
I walked forward, allowing everyone else to enter the cramped space and take a gander at the glorious creation that sat upon the round table. I sat in my chair at the head of the table and stared in awe at the giant cake before me.
"Ok people, let's get a move on before she attacks the thing." My father said, he'd seen me attack quite a few cakes in my day.
Everyone began to sing happy birthday, as if I was still a ten year old. There was one candle to blow out so as their voices came to a halt I pulled in as much air possible and extinguished the candle, wishing for something that would never be. At the same moment there was a loud crash from the front room as the door was opened hastily.
"Oopsie." I heard a annoyingly high-pitched voice squeal. Not her, not today of all days. It was Kyle's blonde bimbo of a girlfriend. I forgot to mention her huh?
Katie and Kyle had been dating for almost six months, ever since she moved here from her hometown of Houston, Texas. Katie and I had actually been friends for a little while but that soon ended when I realized that she was only interested in guys, her hair, and clothes not always in that particular order. I didn't see it at first but about a week after Katie started eating with us at lunch I noticed that Kyle's eyes would wander over to Katie when I was speaking. I couldn't hold his attention anymore.
The sad thing was, I had gotten them together. I had seen the way he looked at her so when he asked me to set them up I couldn't say no. I would never deny him his happiness, even if it made me miserable. So of course she'd said yes and they'd been together since. Kyle was so focused on Katie that he sometimes couldn't remember about me.
I know I said that I hate attention, but I hate something else much worse. Being forgotten. And that's exactly what happens when Katie's around. Kyle left my side to go greet his girlfriend with an overzealous hug and kiss. Gag me. Not wanting to see the happy couple I looked back at my birthday cake, it seemed to have lost it's magic with my change in mood. The sad thing was, the candle was still burning bright. A trick candle.
Even an inanimate object knew I was fooling myself by wishing for Kyle's attention.
