The Mystery of Youth

This fellowship in a simple quintet,
following time as time goes.

Not the brotherhood from Locksley,
saving virgins from kings.
Not breathing under the bishop’s reign,
with the rapture at the tip of our tongues.

We’ve built a crooked bridge,
just to feel the steady rumble.
Watch the wind rip through the island trees,
it’s never far from rebuilding day.

This fellowship in a simple quintet,
following time as time goes.

Detectives trace our expected steps
through black weekends and smoky cabs,
chasing the midnight owl’s flight,
two city blocks from yesterday’s riot.

Like a newly departed phoenix,
though today we sing hymns to no one,
someday we’ll carve caves with soup spoons;
a testament to where we’ve been
and a service to our chiefs and mentors.

Author's Note: As a prompt for myself to write this poem, I wrote down the names of all my favorite bands and used portions of as many of their names as I could in this poem. Almost every line contains at least one word that references a band; some lines contain as much as three band references. The following is a list of the 21 bands that I was able to use in this poem:
