A nine-year-old Brazilian girl aborted her unborn twin babies four months into her pregnancy. She had been impregnated by her stepfather, who had been raping and abusing her since she was only six.

The law in Brazil prohibits abortion, unless the baby is a product of rape or the baby poses a threat the life of the mother. Even though both of these exceptions applied to this young girl, Archbishop Don Jose Cardoso Sobrinho of Recife excommunicated her mother, doctor, and the entire medical team who aided in the abortion from the Roman Catholic Church. The girl herself could not be excommunicated as minors are exempt from this punishment.
