It was like a perfect dream. Like an angel had come and landed right in my lap, or I had rubbed a magic lamp and a genie was ready to grant me three wishes.
But it isn’t a dream.
It’s real.
I lean against my doorframe, lost in a daze, staring down the moonlit hallway before me. Another verse and I shudder.
Where was it coming from?
After one last glance to the sleeping form on my bed, I force my tired body out of the door and stagger down my hall; leaning against the off-white walls for support. Why do my limbs feel so heavy? I’ve gotten plenty of sleep but…
I am snapped out of my train of thought as the music increases in volume—making me feel even worse.
For the past week, I’d hear that song playing outside my window every night. And for the past week I’ve fallen asleep wondering who or what exactly was playing that melody. But tonight, I’m going to find out.
“Not this time,” I breathe, gripping the walls for support, “I don’t want to sleep to your music, I want to watch you play it…”
Finally, I make it to the stairs and the muffled lyrics become clearer. Is this French?
“Venez à moi
Venez à moi maintenant”
I take cautious steps down the stairs, knowing my half-awake form can easily fall, as I listen to the amazing song continue.
“Écouter ma chanson
Et sommeil pour ce soir”
I remember all the times I’ve asked my fiancee, the one sleeping in my bed, if she has heard the music, but all she’d do is look at me strangely before telling me to go back to sleep. And I did. I fell asleep listening to angels rejoicing.
The carpet sinks under my bare feet as I pad out into the living room across from the stairwell and glance around through blurred vision. Suddenly, my eyes halt when they reach the glass looking to the back yard and onto the pond my soon-to-be stepmother insisted on installing. A silhouette sits on the edge, and suddenly I know.
“Mais si vous errez
Et chercher mon amour”
A wave of fatigue washes over my body, but I press onward: first by dragging myself through the room, second by fumbling with the lock on the sliding glass door and third by stumbling out into the backyard. The sound is crystal clear, but my vision is far from it as all I can see is a blurry figure with it’s lengthy back facing me.
“Je vous aimerai
Mais je vous aimerai à la mort”
I want to speak, but not a word can pass my lips as the figure turns, transparent beauty, and looks at me through half-lidded golden eyes. Reaching out, I go to grasp the angel before me, knowing I’m on the edge of collapsing; but before I can ever hope to touch her she smiles, revealing two rows of razor-sharp teeth.
And my eyes close for the last time.
Come to me
Come to me now
And sleep for this evening
But if you wander
And seek my love
I will love you
But I will love you to death

The next morning, my fiancée sobs as she clutches a missing person report in her shaking hands. The news banner on my TV reads another has mysteriously disappeared after claiming to have heard music when others around them haven’t. The reporter asks if it could be a mass drugging and kidnapping, but now only I really know…
Be careful what you wish for.

MHC: This was a quickie. I’ve been getting into Greek mythology lately. Also, pardon if the French is a bit sloppy; I used an online translator so it may not be completely accurate.
