Remembered from an autumn

Days have passed and months have followed
And still I hear that whisper,
Remembered from an autumn years ago,
It’s melodic voice now lulls me to rest
“Remember who we were”, it says
“Remember how we loved”
And then all is still again.
The message sent, the leaves have fallen
But “Remember” echoes through my head,
And calls me to a dreaming slumber.

Dark shadows play across his face
As he lifts a hand to beckon me
A caressing wind combs his hair
And sapphires light his eyes too bright.
It’s him, the warrior who keeps my heart,
It is him the autumn remembers.
Falling leaves of copper swim the air
And his thumb smoothes my tear wet cheek,
I stare into his adoring eyes
His lips then part to speak;
“Remember” he says, “I will come home again”.

I wake and find I’m dreaming,
The yellowed sun has begun to set.
But footsteps sound on the gravelled road
And an autumn breeze call to me,
It tells me to “Remember”,
Remember he and don’t forget.
I look up from my silent slumber
As leaves of copper swim again,
A man has neared my place of rest,
He looks down upon me on the grass.
“Remember?” his deep voice asks in hope.
I smile and tears fall wet from both our eyes.
The autumn dances happily,
Had prepared us for this sight.
I stand and kiss that war hard man,
“How could I forget?”.
