"I love him," she said plainly.
"So what? I love you!" he yelled back.
She recoiled. His words were like a slap to the face. The deafening roar of thunder and the spark of lightning.
She searched his eyes for some semblance of truth. His eyes grew soft, then hard again.
He started to turn and walk away but she grabbed his wrist. Her voice pleading. Demanding. "What did you say?"
He gazed into her eyes thoughtfully, pulling gently out of her grasp. "Nothing. You love him. Go. Be happy."
For a moment they stared in each others eyes. Waiting.
Waiting for him to say he didn't want her to go.
Waiting for her to say she didn't want to leave.
And like all the moments before it, it vanished.
They both went on their separate ways.
But not a day went by when they didn't wonder what would have happened if they had been more selfish in their love and less selfless.
