You don’t ever suspect it

You try to inhale

As a way to grasp some reality

But something seems to take that from you

Blocking you, choking you

The panic sets in.

-

You can no longer feel

The cool water on your skin

Or your body thrashing

Against unimaginable weight

And you miss that

You miss the life you held in your tight grasp,

But not tightly enough

Carelessly wasted

-

All you want is to close your eyes

And wake up from the nightmare

Hug yourself in relief

And cry

And thank God

Nothing was real

It was all a dream

It was all a dream

-

But when you open your eyes

All you’ll find are the bright lights

You foolishly thought you could hide from

And the tornado of bubbles

You’ve created for yourself

That keeps you where you are

-

And no one seems to

Know enough to save you

So you think, “What can I do

To save myself?”
