The Girl in the Green Beret

The girl in the green beret eating walnuts sat on the edge of a green bench
and received a few odd looks from strangers
because she was having the most extraordinary effect upon the bench -
she wasn’t very big at all (one would call her petite) and yet
one end of the bench was lifting up, up in the air as though held in
the fingertips of a giant invisible hand, and she was slipping
quietly and contentedly right down to the edge of the bench,
and she landed with a muted thud
on the bubblegum-spotted pavement, and the bench thudded down as well.
They looked a shifty pair, the bench and the girl.
What we remarked on afterwards was how unperturbed she was, as if she
could share jokes with gravity like this all the time. We watched her
for a bit, but she stayed sitting on the ground,
eating her walnuts until the packet was empty.
