Chapter 5

Mary returned to an empty art room. She put her things away, and departed for her next class. She intended to stop by her locker. She didn’t want to think about what happened on the roof, she couldn’t figure out why he would kiss her.

She shook her head trying to get him out of her head. She didn’t know what to think anymore. She reached her locker after a little stroll from the art room.

She was startled by a familiar face, “can we talk?”

She turned around, “hi,” she said.

“Princess you look upset, what’s wrong?” Tristan purred.

“Nothing you really want to hear about.” She said.

“Try me,” he said.

“Mm, well my emotions are shot, and my ex kissed me. That sounds so weird, my ex.”

“So he kissed you did he.” he said, “so who’s kiss do you prefer?”

“Oh well aren’t you just a regular bad boy,” she laughed, “I would have to have a second kiss to be able to decide.”

“You’re playing with me aren’t you?” he said, “Miss Princess knows how to joke.”

“I was perfectly serious,” she said, “the fact of the matter is that, Jason and I never kissed more than a few times. It’s never moved beyond that.”

“So you’re saying you want me to kiss you?”

“Well not here,” she said, “and not right this second.”

All of a sudden the late bell rang, cutting their conversation short, “well that’s my cue,” he said.

“Well see you later,” she said.

“Wait; come out for coffee with me this afternoon,” he said, “please?”

“Ok,” she said, “but, only because you asked so nicely.”

“I’ll meet you at your locker,” he said, “after last class.”

“Mmm,” she sighed, “rooftop, I’ll be on the rooftop.” He stood and watched her walk away. Watching he realized that, his class was in the same direction.

-Some time later before end of school-

“Mary,” Jesse said, “mind telling me what’s going on?”

“Going on with what?”

“You,” he said, “your being odd.”

“Hmm,” she sighed, “dunno, I might like being odd.”

“Mary,” he said, “your not letting him get to you are you?”

“Let who get to me?” she asked.
“Jason.”

“Why would I do something silly like that,” she said, “he made his choice, and it wasn’t me.”

He walked over to her and pulled her into a hug, “we’ve been friends since we were kids, you can’t lie to me,” he said, “You should know that by now.”

She didn’t say anything; she just stood there and let him hug her. It was what she needed right then at that moment. At that moment Shelly burst into the room, “there you guys are,” she said. they remained joined in their hug, you could tell she didn’t mind. She rushed over and hugged Mary from behind making a Mary sandwich.

“ok,” mary said, “your squeezing me a little to hard, I can’t breathe.”

“oh,” Jesse said, “sorry, you know how shelly can get some times.”

“so what are you doing this afternoon?” shelly asked Mary.

“mmm,” she hummed, “I’m going out with Tristian.” She cringed for a moment afraid that shelly would once again over react.

“really?” shelly asked, “That.. I can’t imagine what a date with him would be like.”
“I don’t know either,” Mary giggled, “but it should be interesting.”

“interesting?” Jesse asked dumbfounded, “what an unusual choice in words.”

“Ok so maybe interesting wasn’t the right word,” she mumbled, “I should have said It’ll be an adventure.”

“ah now your talking,” shelly said, “your to call me tonight and give me all the juicey details.”

“ok,” Mary said, “are you sure you wouldn’t rather me call you every 10 minutes with an update?”

“nope,” shelly said, “were going on our own date, It would get in the way of your plans.”

-After school, Rooftop-

Tristan, walked through the door that goes to the roof, and there she was. She was sitting on the side of the roof that got the most sun. it was almost like she was memorizing the scenery. She had a sketch pad on her lap, and her eyes were closed. Suddenly she opened her eyes and smiled, looking over at him, like she had know he had been there the whole time.

“Are you sure that this isn’t your second home?” he joked.

“Mmm,” she sighed, “I don’t think that my tent would work up here.”

“that and you wouldn’t have access to a bathroom,” he said.

“Yes that would be bad,” she laughed.

“If I was a painter, I would have painted you with your eyes closed looking into the sun,” he said.

“What you don’t paint?” she asked jokingly.

“only in my mind,” he said, holding an index finger to his temple. Seeing this, she turned to a new page in her book.
“then tell me Tristan,” she said, “tell me what is it that you see?”

He sat down next to her, “I see a girl, that enjoys painting on the school rooftop.”

“that’s interesting,” she said, “ tell me, what does this girl look like?”

“well, she has long curly red locks, that fall down past her shoulders towards the middle of her back. She had beautiful Hazel eyes, that confuse me because at first glance they seem brown but then they seem to have flecks of gold or green in them.” He said moving his hand to her cheek, “her skin is soft and the color of burnt ivory, and her lips are luscious and full.”

“mmm,” she sighed, “something like this?” she asked, holding up the sketch she had just drawn by the description.

“exactly like that,” he said, “I don’t think she has any idea how beautiful she actually is.”

“should I do a painting of this?” she asked, “I could call it ‘Self portrait through the eyes of another’.”

“yes,” he said, “I think it would be splendid.”
