late night cups of espresso

the window’s open,
a hint of summer is in the air
and here’s me snuggled under the sheets
on a beautiful may afternoon
wearing nothing but an
oversized men’s long-sleeved shirt.

– chin raised to catch the
tentative rays of light
caressing my face like a familiar
lover

(grade eleven when she
ran her hand through my
new short haircut and
called me bashful because
i blushed
or that time his hands slid
under the thin cotton of
my shirt,
palms cradling the small of my back)

like a cat,
i preen when petted,
suck my bottom lip in to silence
my purr.
maybe i tend to hold back on first glance
hands joined on my lap,
ankles demurely crossed
but really i wanna cuddle
just with you.

i forget what it’s like to fall
asleep next to someone
else
