Chapter One – Automatic Reaction

I've never been in love before. Make no mistake, it is not for lack of trying. I am simply incapable of feeling love. It was not always like this; once, a long time ago, I shared it freely with anyone and everyone that crossed paths with me. Unfortunately, the memory of that time is as disconnected from me as my heart has been ever since. And that disconnect has unwaveringly endured the test of time.

Three simple words were the death of me, though any other girl would probably treasure them. I am not any other girl, though. And in the era of text messaging, it is much more difficult to judge how serious those words were meant to be, without being there face-to-face with him, and therefore it was much more difficult to respond in kind.

It was mostly an automatic reaction that led me to forward his words directly back to him. Afterward, I pressed 'Send' too soon, realizing a moment too late what I was signing myself up for. And dreading that I did what could not be undone. At least not without the involvement of hurt feelings.
