Dreams

There is a boy with red hair, and he’s paralysed down one half,

Which really means that his hands move independently of his body.

They find themselves in my hair and he seems surprised.

Somebody shot me in the mouth, I’m afraid that I have swallowed

The bullet. The hole in my tongue is neat and tastes like brass.

I run to the darkest place I can find but there is another girl there.

She wants to be alone, together, and I am annoyed but don’t show it.

Cassie works with me, she has an asymmetrical hairstyle; black.

Her lips are red and waxy and I feel I know her so well, I wonder

Where she has been lately. Then I wake up and realise that she

Has never existed in this reality. I am disappointed.

I find the record and run the bath-water, sinking into the warmth

And watching the paint strip away from her face to reveal a

Hidden message. It was what I knew all along.

It was the name of a secret song.
