I memorized the way the maggots died in the old cat food can
their bodies twisting and curling from the bleach
the hot driveway nuzzled against my bare feet as the moving slowed
and I could only wish to do it again

so I took a sharp stick and sliced a caterpillar in half
breath to guts
spread out in the grass

and then I watched Matt die from the wooden bleachers
as he cradled the blond bombshell
she was breaking his heart
and he could not let her go

he blamed my teeth marks on his knee
and he saw something sick in me
with his arms around my waist
and his hands fishing through my backpack
for ammo

I begged for forgiveness
but the marks left on his knee set him off

So I lied through those teeth
just to see their reaction
because he branded me with that hate
and I can't wait
to see him again

(he stood shattered and bright
sporting black pants
in the dead center of summer)

yeah he branded me with that hate
and I can’t wait
I can’t wait
to see him again
