Why the lone wolf howls
Undercover of the moon, its face a lonely white,
The young wolf looked up to the sky, looked up into the night.
She rose her muzzle in the air, and closed slowly her gold eyes,
A tear escaped its place, and she began her mournful cries.
--
She cried for long lost freedom, when she howled up to the moon,
For running through old forests, for hope she’d be there soon.
She howled for days gone by, whittled slowly now to naught,
She howled so long she cried, cried for what she sought.
--
Too long had she been left, to howl alone her song,
No pack sounding an answer, oh but she did long.
So howl she did again, her lonely lullaby,
Her golden eyes closed tight, dreaming she could fly.
--
Ring the bells of freedom, she cried into the night
Keeping her one companion, the lonely moon in sight.
And the moon looked down on she, lonely in her cage,
And wept as well for freedom, a war he could not wage.
