The spring air was crisp, its tender breeze caressing the sections of our exposed skin. The sun's light tickled our scalps and made us squint in the direction we were walking. Perfect choice of location for our first official date. As we walked on in peaceful silence, the gentle waves of the river receding back and forth, I took ahold of her hand, lacing her delicate fingers between my own. Her touch sent chills rushing up my spine in the most delightful manner imaginable.
We locked eyes for a moment, and I stared in awe at the beauty that made up her face. Her large eyes, which were of such a royal aqua hue...the cute button-like shape of her nose, and the adorable freckles strewn across it...and, oh! Those lips. I felt the back of my neck catch fire as she curved them upwards in a playful, pouty grin.
"What are you looking at?" she wondered.
"You, silly. You're gorgeous, you know that?"
She was always so modest. I wondered why that was, why she couldn't just accept what a goddess she was. But it also made me wonder why she was wasting her time with a mess such as myself. She stopped suddenly, and I realized she'd been staring at me intently, furrowing her eyebrows together in that cute way she had whenever she grew frustrated.
"What is it?" I inquired curiously.
"You. I know that look."
"Oh, really?" I played along. "What look am I making, then?"
"The one you make when you're thinking you aren't good enough for me." She stepped closer, and her breath intoxicated me. She peered up at me, as she was a few inches shorter. "When you think I'm only wasting my time by being with you."
She didn't give me a chance to answer before she led me behind a huge tree, its swaying branches providing ample shade for us both. She pulled me down onto the lush grass, damp from last night's shower, so that she was laying on top of me. She raked her fingers through my hair so my brunette locks were splayed around my scalp. "When are you going to stop thinking like that? It's not true. I don't even know where you got the idea from."
"And why isn't it true?"
"Because. I...I love you."
I drew in a sharp, astonished breath. The words I'd been waiting to hear from her for almost a year. They were more beautiful coming from her lips than I'd imagined. And because she had taken such a long time to answer me, I knew she meant it.
I excitedly whispered to her my response of mutual feelings in between soft kisses, muttering it again and again, as we tangled our bodies together while the sun sank beneath the horizon.
