Summary: “Give me a chance to prove that I'm a good guy.” Why I was giving this boy, whom I knew to be bad, a chance to prove my powers wrong, I didn't know. All I knew was that my powers were never wrong. So why am I doubtful? Why am I feeling so much?

Chapter Nine
I looked at myself in the mirror. It was about 5:45, which meant I only had a few minutes before Cory would be here to pick me up for the dance. I had a knee length spaghetti strap red dress and small black flats on. My hair was done professionally- curled and in a fancy half-ponytail. My nails were painted red. I had only a little make-up on. I had my class ring on, charm bracelet and music note necklace on for jewelry.
There was a knock on the door. “Come in,” I said.
“Cory's here sis,” Andrew said opening the door, “Wow. You look great.”
“Thanks,” I said blushing. I picked up my red clutch and put my cell phone, wallet and keys in it and went to the door. I would have brought my camera, but it wouldn't fit in there. That was why Andrew was going to come during the crowning with it so I could get pictures still.
I walked down the stairwell and saw Cory standing there. He wore a white dress shirt with a red tie and black pants. “Wow. You look great,” Cory said when he spotted me.
“Thanks. Andy's doing pictures at the crowning,” I said.
“Okay,” Cory said, “We're getting the professional pictures anyways.”
“Right,” I said, “See ya later Andy. I'll be home before midnight. Take care of yourself. There's some left-overs in the fridge.”
“Alright, now go! Have a good time,” Andrew said laughing as he just about pushed Cory and I out of the house.
“Gees, wonder who he's gonna have over,” I muttered as we walked to the car. “If I find out he threw a party there when I get home he's dead meat.”
“Calm down Mel,” Cory said laughing.
“Sorry,” I said laughing and he held open the car door for me. “Thank you.”
“No problem,” Cory said smiling and went around the car, “So how was Cole's last night?”
“Really good actually. I stayed until nine surprisingly,”
“That's good,”
“Definitely. He said that he only brings people that he absolutely trusts and know are going to be with him for life home.”
“Wow. Why?”
“That's not my place to tell.”
“Understandable. So, uh, how do you feel about Cole?”
“I like him. A lot. I don't know if I told you, but Cameron said that Cole's aura color is apparently close to mine. And that means that we're destined for each other.”
“Did you start liking him before or after you found that out?”
“Before. That's why I was trying so hard to impress his family last night.”
“I figured. I guess this won't be considered a date, will it?”
“No. I'm sorry Cory.”
“Its okay. I didn't think it would end up being like one.”
“When did you start liking me?”
“I don't even know. Romantically I think it started when you became a Freshman last year.”
“Wow. And you didn't say anything until now?”
“I didn't want to ruin our friendship. Or mine with Andrew. Or your relationship with Andrew.”
“Good points,” I said nodding my head and smiling.
--
I sat down in the chair. Music was playing quietly. The dance was just starting. Cory and I had just gotten our pictures and I would soon have to get another one taken for the class officers. I looked around and spotted Lily and Jackalyn. They immediately walked over. “Oh my gosh Mel that dress is gorgeous!” Lily cooed.
“Thanks,” I said smiling, “Do any of you have your cameras?”
“Yeah. We both do. Don't you?” Jackalyn questioned.
“There is no way I am bringing my grandfather's camera with me here,” I replied, “Andy's coming at crowning with it.”
“Okay,” Lily said nodding her head, “Cory, could you get a picture of us?”
“Sure,” Cory answered smiling and took the two cameras, “Get ready to go blind.”
“Okay!” Jackalyn said laughing and we all got into a pose.
I felt Cole's aura coming near. Cory shot the last picture and I turned around, seeing Cole entering the gymnasium. “Oh la-la Mel,” Lily said nudging me. I had called both the girls and told them about what had happened at Cole's house. I blushed and noticed he was coming towards us.
“Did he talk to you last night or anything afterwards?” Jackalyn asked.
“No,” I answered.
“Hello everyone,” Cole greeted smiling as he walked over.
“Hey,” we all said.
“Cole! Mel!” one of the advisors, Mr. Harrington, called.
“Yeah?” we said in unison.
“Class officer pictures!” he exclaimed.
“Coming,” we said. I walked over to the make-shift background with Cole.
“You look amazing tonight Melody,” Cole complimented as we waited for the others to come over to the make-shift background.
“Thanks. You look great too,” I said blushing as I smiled at him. He wore a red dress shirt with a black tie and black pants.
“Thanks,” he said. I thought I saw a fain blush on his cheeks.
After getting the picture taken I went back to the others and Cole went somewhere else. The music started playing louder and it felt like the adrenaline was starting to rush in my blood. I grinned and grabbed Cory's hand; dragging him onto the dance floor. I was going to let go of everything tonight. Act like a teenager for once. Have some actual fun.
--
I walked over and grabbed a bottle of water before taking a seat and a deep breath. It was already 10:00. There was only about an hour left of the dance, and twenty minutes left until the crowning. My legs hurt but it was worth the fun. “My legs kill,” I groaned.
“I know,” Lily agreed plopping into a seat as well, “And there's still an hour. I wonder who will be the court.”
A slow song started playing and I saw Cory start to walk over. But before he could, Jason suddenly appeared in front of me. “Uh, Mel, may I have this dance?” he asked quietly.
I looked at Cory behind him, who nodded. “Alright. Let me tell Cory something first,” I said. I walked over to Cory and stood on my tip-toes to whisper in his ear. “Ask Lily to dance. I don't want her to be lonely anymore.” He nodded and walked over to Lily. She looked at me and grinned as I walked over to Jason.
“So how have you been?” Jason asked as we walked onto the dance floor and he wrapped his arms around my waist.
“Really well actually,” I said smiling, “What about you?”
“Okay. Not the best and not the worst,” he said shrugging. We lapsed into silence for a minute. “Cole told me you met his parents yesterday.”
“Yeah. It was a lot of fun,” I replied.
We lapsed into silence again. I looked around the room and caught sight of Cole. He almost seemed...hurt. I read into his aura and saw that he was, indeed, hurt slightly. I wondered why. “He likes you,” Jason stated, apparently noticing that I was staring at Cole.
“What? Who?” I questioned, looking into his eyes.
“Cole. I'm not suppose to say anything. I just want you to be happy. And I've realized you both have been a lot happier since you've started talking. Just Mel, don't hurt him. Please.”
“I won't. I like him a lot. Thanks Jason. I've already been told a lot of times that he likes me. I just want to hear it from him.”
“You never know though Mel. He may be waiting to hear it from you first.”
I was silent. And it was then that I realized how strange it felt to be in Jason's arms. It didn't feel like I belonged there anymore. It just didn't feel like I belonged in his arms. It had felt like that in the other song I had danced with Cory. I looked over at Lily and Cory, and they actually seemed quite happy. I couldn't help but hope that the two of them would make it work.
The song turned to a fast song and I got out of Jason's arms immediately. I walked over to my table and took a drink. It had brought back a lot of memories. But surprisingly...they weren't making me want to cry. They weren't scaring me either. They didn't make me want to run. Just the uncomfortable-ness of dancing with him did. “Are you okay?” Lily asked appearing beside me.
“Yeah I'm fine. Just really thirsty.”
“What happened when you were dancing with Jason?” Jackalyn inquired walking over.
“It felt so...different. It didn't feel like I belonged in his arms anymore,” I said.
“It just proves that you're over him,” Cole said appearing behind me.
I whipped around and looked into his eyes. I didn't see the pain I had seen in them when I had danced with Jason. Had Cole been afraid that I actually wanted to be back with Jason and that that was why I was dancing with him? Had Cole been...jealous?
“Hey,” I said smiling, “Having a good time?”
“Pretty good time, yeah,” he said shrugging.
“Come on, I do believe I owe you a dance,” I said smiling as I took his hand. I almost thought I felt something rush through my hand as I did so.
“I thought we meant slow song when we agreed on that last night,” he said laughing as I pulled him onto the dance floor.
“We never specified,” I retorted laughing as we started dancing together, “Don't worry, if you don't want to count this then we don't have to.”
“I don't really care,” he said shrugging.
“I don't either. Your choice since apparently I'm the one that has to save the dance,” I said as I recalled his remark last night when he dropped me off.
“It doesn't count towards the saved dance, but it counts towards a dance,” he stated after a moment.
“Alright then,” I said.
--
I sat down and Cole actually came and sat with us as well. The music stopped and Mr. Harrington took a microphone. “Hello everyone! Welcome to the 2009 Sophomore Snowball!” he said and everyone cheered. I saw Andrew in the crowd entering the large gymnasium. “Now it is time for the crowning ceremony! We will go prince, princess, prince, princess, queen, and then king. And our first prince is...Collin O'Brien!” One of our classmates walked up and received a sash. “The first princess is...Jackie Rouse!” All of us were stunned as we realized it was our Jackie that had been picked. She squealed and walked up. “Then we have...Jason O'Dell!” I was slightly surprised at that. I had expected him to be the actual Snowball King. Not prince. “And for him we have, Lily Warriner!” Lily squealed and walked up to the teachers. “And our Snowball Queen is...the one and only Mel Anderson!” I was in shock at first. Me? How...how was it me that was Snowball Queen? Cole patted my back and I finally stood up and walked to receive the flowers, tiny scepter, and sash. I stood beside Jason and he smiled at me. I smiled back. I suddenly realized who he probably lost to. It was the only logical explanation. Just as the name hit me, Mr. Harrington announced it. “Cole Rainsford!” I clapped and smiled as he started walking towards me after receiving his own things. “And now it is time for the court's dance.” Cole held his hand out for me and I laughed as he bowed. I took his hand he led me out to the center of the dance floor.
“So will this dance count?” I questioned as I looked up at him.
“I think so,” he said smiling. There was something in his eyes I couldn't identify. It made me unable to look away from his eyes though. We just swayed as we looked into each other's eyes. I was shocked at how...good, how right, it felt to be in his arms dancing. It felt like that was where I belonged. “Melody,” he said softly towards the end of the dance.
“Yeah?” I said, my voice suddenly extremely quiet.
“I think I'm ready to tell you why I wanted you to meet my parents so badly,” he said.
I tilted my head to the side, curious as to what he was talking about. Instead of speaking with words though, he pressed his lips to mine softly. As he started to kiss me I felt myself getting lost. He pulled away after a moment. “I like you Melody. As more than just friends. And I don't want to pretend to not want to be more than that with you. I want you to be my girlfriend Melody,” he said.
It was almost as if the whole place was silent as I heard him say this. I felt a smile coming to my lips. “I'd love to be your girlfriend Cole,” I said grinning.
Cole kissed me again lightly and then the song ended. “Looks like we have a new couple,” Jackalyn inferred walking over to us along with the others.
“I told you Mel,” Jason whispered in my ear. I only felt my grin increase.
“So are you two together now?” Lily inquired.
“Yep,” we answered.
“Awesome!” the girls squealed.
I started laughing and saw the flash out of the corner of my eye as I felt Andrew's aura coming near. “Can I get a picture of our King and Queen please?” he asked.
“Of course,” I said laughing.
Andrew took pictures of all of us and we finished the dance. I felt happier then I had in a long time as I walked out of those doors; Cole holding my hand, Andrew with his arm over my shoulder and Cory walking behind me, talking intensely with Lily. I couldn't help but want to stop time and never un-freeze it. My life felt so perfect at that very moment. My friends were right around me, and I had my brother with me. And now I had a boyfriend too.
Life was great.
