Prologue
In the darkness of night, the loud scream of a mage shattered the normal silent response of the forest.
The scream echoed hauntingly over the wide, grassy fields of Aradale, and reached the ears of a hooded figure, who stopped on the highest hill and turned to the woods. Arabella Feathern held her baby closer to her chest. Her last defense against the beast had been the mage, and she was now dead.
Arabella then realized she was alone; she had no one else to protect her and her child. The golden haired woman turned her eyes desperately toward the dark forest before her. She had no choice but to enter these woods known as the forgotten forest, were few ventured and even fewer returned.
No one really knew what lay beyond the line of trees that bordered the grasslands. The only eyes that witnessed the secrets that were woven between the towering trees were now condemned to death.
Arabella’s fate was chosen. She clenched the crying baby tighter and sprinted into the woods.
She entered the dark tunnel of trees, were the branches swiped across her lovely pale face and cut deep into her thin arms, as if they were trying to reach out and seize her. She could hear the roars of the beast thunder over the forest as it hunted her. Each scream coming closer and closer.
Her body screamed for mercy as she ran threw the thorny underbrush; but she didn’t care. Her breath came in sharp, painful gasps as her forced her legs to move faster. She only hoped she could get there in time. She crashed through the sharp branches and landed on her knees at the edge of a thundering waterfall.
With tears slipping down her own rosy cheeks, she looked into the teary, amethyst eyes of her daughter for the last time. It would be the last time they were alone, as mother and daughter. The child’s small fingers reached for her face, and settled in her cheek. She closed her eyes to the warm touch, breathing in the emotion the comfort brought on. She got feet, warily, careful not to ruin the last moments she had alone with her.
“Arabella,” The deep, wizened voice came from behind the blond mage. She slowly turned to face it.
The thick, rich voice had come from a dragon, a large, dignified dragon with jet black scales that glowed silver off the stars and eyes as azure as blazing sapphires. His body was sleek, and thin, but he was large and impressively built. His ivory horns were solid, and came to a razor sharp point.
“It’s time, Milady.” He said softly in a voice as clear and smooth as a bell.
Arabella swallowed a lump in her throat. “Thank you for saving my daughter,” she whispered tenderly. “Twilight Dragon.”
The Twilight Dragon nodded his majestic head. “Anything for you, Milady.”
Abruptly, another booming roar sounded through the forest. Arabella jumped and turned to look, but all she could see were the dark trees surrounding. She could almost make out what the beast was screaming.
“Arabella!”
She clenched her infant tighter, and her heart hummed in her chest. “The Blood Dragon is coming for you.” The Twilight Dragon acknowledged. “We should hurry.”
Arabella nodded and turned to her child. She wished this moment would never end. Her and her daughter would look into each other’s eyes forever. But, her fate was set in stone, and her daughter had a destiny. The tears blurred her vision. She reached down to hold her daughter’s left hand.
“She is Logan of Aradale.” The Twilight Dragon said. “She is the key to a great power, wanted by the gluttonous, Arabella. And one day she will end this war.”
Arabella raised her head and gazed at him, her eyes pleading. “Take care of her, Twilight Dragon.”
“With my life, Arabella.”
Before she handed her daughter to him, Arabella slid a necklace off her shoulders. It was a silver chain, with a black gem on the end. As she converted all her magic into it, the precious stone became blue in color. Then, she tucked it inside the white blankets Logan was enfolded in.
She kissed her daughter’s forehead and held her out to the dragon.
Another roar filled the forest, and Arabella jumped, closing her eyes shut tightly. When she opened them once more, the Twilight Dragon had wrapped him long tail around the child and pulled her from Arabella’s grasp. He slowly placed her on his back, in a small hollow on the base of his neck. Then, he blew softly at her, creating a small silver pouch for her to be safe in.
“Goodbye, Arabella.” He stretched out his mighty black wings, and took to the air. His lustrous black scales became one with the night, and his form disappeared around the trees. He was gone.
Arabella stood motionless, watching the spot she saw them last. She sobbed, her demur quivering. She wanted to scream to them, tell them to come back for her. She bit her lip to prevent herself from doing so.
Finally, the last roar sounded through the forest. It was so deafening this time, that the ground shook beneath her feet. Arabella covered her ears.
It finally stopped. And all was curiously hushed in the forgotten forest.
Arabella slowly turned, bringing her hands back down to her sides. Her mouth dropped open in awe, as she stared into the maroon eyes of The Blood Dragon.
