So anyway, normally it's supposed to be Taylor doing this, but since I haven't been able get a hold of her for two weeks, I decided to do it myself. I'm really getting worried... yeah. So, anyway, I hope you enjoy.

Chapter Three: Tiberius

When morning came, I yawned and woke up. I rolled onto my side and saw my older brother, Taylor, sitting on my chair reading one of my books.

"Why are you in my room?" I asked groggily.

"Nothing important. Have you met the neighbor kid?" he asked.

"He's not a kid; he's the same age as I am," I grumbled.

"Are you going to give him a tour?" Taylor asked.

"He doesn't really like me," I said.

"Can't imagine why not…" Taylor sighed. I gave him the finger.

"I don't like him that much either," I grumbled.

"Come on," Taylor said, "You should get out of the house…" Then it clicked. The only reason he wanted me to show Vergil around was because he wanted to have the house to himself so that his girlfriend Marinna could come over.

"Fine," I said, not wanting to get involved in one of their bedroom scenes.

I called Morgan and Joss, and they walked over. I packed myself some water bottles and snacks, and when they showed up we walked across the street to the Gibson's house. I knocked on the door.

Jessica answered. She wore a sweater and jeans. I narrowed my eyes, wondering where they moved from for her to think that 80 degrees was too hot for normal clothes.

"Can Vergil hang out with us?" Joss asked.

"Sure," Jessica said. "I'll get him." Jessica ran up. A few minutes later she came back and said, "He's waking up. Oh, and Todd and I are going to meet some high-school friends tonight, so Vergil needs to be home by three."

I checked my watch: 9:45. "Ok," I said.

Soon Vergil came running down. Jessica glanced at him, and walked inside.

I led the way as we walked down the street and went in the direction of the shopping center (which really shouldn't count as a shopping center, but rather one of those places where people go to get groceries and tacky clothes.)

The island that we lived on wasn't very big in comparison to the city by the coast, a few miles by ferry, but it was large enough to get lost in.

On the north side of the island was a long beach. A lot of people rented beach houses. I turned and biked west down the main bike path.

We walked, and soon passed by a group of girls. Joss made some comments on how 'gorgeous you are this morning', and I heard them giggle.

"Are you going to the beach?" Joss called.

"Yeah," one of them- Nina, I think her name was- shouted back.

"We'll be meeting you later," Joss winked at them.

Morgan grabbed Joss by the back of his collar to get him moving, or else we'd have been there for hours.

Morgan and I showed Vergil where everywhere was, and occasionally Joss would point something out (usually where someone lived).

Finally we came to a park. It was about five miles away from where I lived (Morgan and Joss lived a few blocks away), but since we were used to walking everywhere-or biking, as the case sometimes was- we weren't tired. Vergil was panting a little, trying not to look to pathetic next to us.

Little kids used to play here, but ever since people started going missing about ten years back, everyone stopped coming. Now it was mostly abandoned, with only a few dog walkers, and occasionally a group of Goths.

"What's this?" Vergil asked. "Is this incredibly important?"

"See that forest across the street?" I asked.

Vergil looked ant nodded.

"It's haunted," Joss said.

Vergil raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"

"Actually, that's just a rumor," I said. "But about ten years ago about twenty people went missing. They were the people who had always came to this park or hung out around this area. Then someone did some research and found that every ten years, about, a group of people would go missing. No bodies or nothing was found."

"Why didn't this make the news?" Vergil asked. "If something like that happened…"

"Because the family who owns it, they've got influence," Morgan explained. "They're the Thalia family. They moved to the island about two hundred years ago, and they're the ones who started it as a city. It's been in the family every since."

"That's…kind of interesting," Vergil looked at me when he said 'interesting.' I looked straight at him again, not turning away for what must have been a full minute, until finally he looked away.

"Now a woman named Miranda lives here," Joss added. "She's like, twenty or something. She never comes out except to get some food and tacky clothes."

"So, they're a weird family," Vergil said. "How can you know that they had something to do with the people who disappeared?"

"Because," I said, "Every ten years something like this happens. No one else has lived here for so long."

"And at night," Joss cut in, "People who live around here hear weird noises. When they went to talk to Miranda Thalia, all she'd say to them was, 'Do noises prove anything?'"

"Does Miranda live alone?" Vergil asked. I could tell he was struggling to be polite, which must have been under threat of death from Jessica.

"Yeah. She has since her dad died some mysterious death a few years ago," Morgan said. "They say that she killed him, even though she was at home and he was driving home. It was a car accident, but, well, it doesn't fit. The entire car burst up into flames, and that scenario didn't fit anything."

"So don't go in there," Joss summed up the lesson to Vergil, probably hoping we'd go to the beach sooner.

Vergil looked back at the forest. His eyes were an icy, metallic grey. Something about them made me just wanting to keep staring. They seemed to accent his tattoo. His tattoo seemed to suddenly look slightly different. Maybe it was the light, but it seemed to be deeper in his skin, as though it was recently carved with a dirty knife.

I blinked. What a thought. Morgan was always telling me that I was too random…

"Is it guaranteed that if you go in you'll disappear?" Vergil suddenly asked. He turned, his eyes briefly crossing mine.

"No, but no one tries it," Morgan said, "If it's not the rumors that scare people, Miranda will have your head."

Vergil rolled his eyes.

"Why do you ask?" Joss cut in (again), "Do you wanna try to disprove the theory? Or are you suicidal?"

Vergil swore something along the lines of, "Anyone would be suicidal if they had to hang around you." But, of course, I couldn't be certain…

"Do you want to go to the beach now?" Morgan asked after a minute of tense silence.

"You're not suicidal, are you?" I asked.

"Of course not," Vergil snapped. "I'm just wondering…if I ever need to disappear or something."

"Of course that's what you meant," Joss joked as he ruffled Vergil's hair. Vergil flinched and punched Joss in the chest.

"What was that for?" he demanded.

"Dude," I said, "Not everyone is used to being able to put up with a killer headache and your hair-fluffing fetishes."

Joss grumbled as we walked to the beach.
