simple happiness

like some scene from a 1980s teen
movie flick, the young couple walk
hand in hand, with her balancing
on the railroad track, with no rumble
in the ground to force her way off.
his ripped jeans hang from his
gaunt frame, hidden inside a leather
biker jacket, an attempt to look older
than his teenage years, & she wears
a sweatshirt of his, huge & gray &
soft with age, something he gave
to keep her warm at night. the grass
hums under the thick soles of his boots,
smashed & then slowly popping back
to life, remembering how to breathe
in the absence of innocence, but not
an absence of love, sweet & wild,
expressed in laced fingers, a grasp
so tight, the love could never escape.
