Author's Note: I had to write this for a final. Enjoy!
The Meaning of Chance
You just happen to be standing in your favorite gas station, the one on Kansas St. that always has the gas ten cents lower than the rest of the stations. You’ve already purchased your gas, but you’re browsing the magazine section (Are Brad and Angelina breaking up this time?) when your eye suddenly catches the brightly colored sign of ‘The Powerball Lottery.’ A sign below shows what the jackpot is up to and your eyes nearly pop out of your skull at the number: 228 million!
For a moment your mind reels through all the houses and cars you would be if you had such an insanely huge sum of money. Yes, you will buy three Ferraris and one will definitely be the $500,000 Enzo Ferrari. A vacation home in the Caribbean sounds absolutely beautiful, until you are unceremoniously yanked back to reality by the little voice in your head that says, “Sounds great, but what are the odds you’ll even get it?”
There’s no harm in buying a lottery ticket. It’s only $1. Even if I don’t win, I will only be out a couple bucks, you reason.
But still, you can’t help but think that even a couple of bucks shouldn’t be wasted. After all, you’ll still need the money for the Kahlua and Cream you’d like to purchase later on.
What are you going to do?
Are you going to purchase the lottery ticket? If so, click to Chap 2
Nah! I have better things to buy than put three bucks into a false hope. Click to Chap 3.
