sometimes i sing songs in airport terminals
like they know better than i do how these things should go,

sometimes the boarding pass is rough against my fingers
and i'm already remembering the people i might not see again.

sometimes i shift my weight between the rigid frames
of faux black leather waiting chairs,

and i look hard into the eyes of people who don't look back
and i wonder if they feel half as empty as i do.
