-1My Wish
Summary: Cara is imagining what she wants her relationship with James to be like.
. . . . . . . .
Tokeyo: Happy birthday!
Drummabeats: Thanks.
Tokeyo: You happy you're eighteen?
Drummabeats: I guess. You wanna hang out? I need to talk to you.
Tokeyo: Okay. I need a ride.
Drummabeats: I'll be there in about 30 minutes.
Tokeyo: ....O...kay.
Drummabeats: Later.
I sat staring at my computer screen for the next fifteen minutes. I didn't know what was going on. James had never and I mean absoluely never asked me to hang out with him before. This was the weirdest thing that had ever happened in my lifetime.
"What's wrong?" My friend, Caitlyn asked me as I continued to stare at the screen for a few more minutes, mouth agape.
"James asked me to hang out."
"And you said?" I turned and looked at Caitlyn then.
"Yes." She rolled her eyes.
"I'm still here y'know."
"I'm sure he'll drop you off at home if you want him to."
"Nah," Caitlyn said, "I'll stay here with Liz."
"Suit yourself."
"She's cooler then you anyways." I turned and looked at Caitlyn, eyebrows raised. She grinned and stuck out her tongue at me.
"You're so mean."
"Go get ready."
"I am ready."
"Go put shoes on."
"Fine."
. . . . . . . .
"Do I look okay?" I asked my best friend before I walked out to where James' car waited in the driveway.
"Yep."
"Bye Caitlyn."
"Bye!"
Walking out to the car made me nervous. I couldn't believe how incredibly nervous it could make me to see him waiting for me in the car that he had probably been driving since he was in tenth grade.
"Hey," I said sliding into the car.
"Hey," he responded, turning to look over his shoulder while he pulled out of the driveway.
"What do you want to talk about?"
"I want to take you somewhere first."
"James, you're acting weird."
"Yeah," he said, "I know."
"Where are you taking me?
"Somewhere." I stared at him for a second, suddenly feeling unsafe with a boy I had known for almost two years.
"James..."
"Just trust me, okay?"
"...fine."
The rest of the ride was silent. I watched the surroundings and he watched the road.
"Why are we stopping here?" I asked, looking at this old playground that he had taken me to.
"It's my favorite place."
"With all the broken down equipment?"
"No one ever comes here."
"Why bring me?"
"That's what I want to talk about." My heart beat wildly in my chest.
"Wh-what?" I stammered. He turned to me, taking my hand and speaking my name with such grace that it made me shiver. I replied by whispering his name.
"I..." he swallowed, "I love you. I always have." I just stared at him.
"All the pain I went through?" I asked with a whimper, "all the nights I stayed up thinking about you. All the relationships I couldn't have because I was still in love with you. All the emotional torture. All the needing so bad to get away?"
"I'm sorry," he said "I couldn't find a way to tell you." I felt tears pouring from my eyes.
"I hated you," I sobbed, "I hated you for such a long time." He spoke my name again, pulling me close. I sobbed into his chest.
"I'm sorry," he whispered into my hair, "I'm so sorry."
"Not as sorry as I am," I said, looking up at him, tears still falling. He stared down at me with a pained expression.
"What?" He asked, worried my answer would be negative. In that moment I had all the power over him in the world. I could crush him or make his spirit soar.
"I'm sorry that I ever..." my voice trailed off and I watched as his eyes began to fill with tears or rejection..."hated you." He stared at me, shocked.
"Are you serious?"
"Yes." He smiled and pulled me close again. I smiled back, leaning my head into his chest.
"All I've wanted for the past year is for you to love me."
"All I've wanted is for you to be my first kiss." I pulled back and looked up at him then.
"I can make that wish come true."
"I can make yours come true too." He smirked and gazed down at me, eyes shimmering.
I closed the distance between us and...
wished that this story was real.
