Chapter Nine

After I kissed Aaron I avoided him for the rest of the party. I was so embarrassed and not only that I felt like my heart was going to explode out of my chest if I ever got that near to him again.

I felt accomplished that I had avoided him for the rest of the time. Coming my way? Bathroom! It was like that the whole time. I must have gone to the bathroom like ten times just because I thought he was coming over to me.

But I was distracted. The way his lips felt on mine, I just couldn’t shake the feeling of having his arms wrapped around me. The way he makes my heart speed up, I couldn’t stop running my fingers across my lips. I just I didn’t know what it was about him. I hadn’t even felt like this when I was crushing on Brian for two months before he asked me out.

“Hey Gwen are you okay?” I snapped out of my trance and looked around to see Angelica standing before me, looking rather concerned.

“Huh? What? Sorry, I was spacing out.”

“I asked if you were alright.”

“Oh, um yeah, I’m good just… tired.”

Angelica crossed her arms. She didn’t buy it one bit. Why did I have to be such a bad liar? When I was a little kid I was a professional how come I sucked now?

I smiled sheepishly at her and she cocked an eyebrow, “Somehow I don’t think that’s the truth.”

“Hey guys, what’s up?” Iris asked she and Maria had just come back from the bathroom.

“Gwen is being more spacey than normal.” Angelica filled them in.

“Oh yeah, I noticed that.” Iris said.

“Yeah, you seem to be avoiding Aaron too, did something happen?” Maria asked.

“What? Aaron? Avoiding him? Puhleez. Psh, ha, you’re funny.”

“Yeah, and you only do that when your lying.” Iris said putting a hand on her hip. They were all looking at me. I gulped there was no getting out of this. “Whoa, guys, come on, now am I being interrogated?” I said trying to get them to drop it but like I said, I knew there was no getting out of this.

“Hey guys what’s going on?” Aaron came up next to us. Oh great, this just kept getting better and better.

“Aaron! Hey! You, yeah, um, let’s play volleyball guys, come on, after all that’s what we’re supposed to be doing.” I felt like an idiot but anything to avoid talking about this, especially in front of Aaron.

Iris narrowed her eyes at me, and Maria and Angelica looked at each other then back at me. And Aaron, well, he just looked confused. In an utterly adorable way that I hated!

“Okay, spill the beans now.” Iris said when we were let out for lunch. They cornered me there was no choice now.

“IkissedAaron.” I mumbled.

“What?”

“IkissedAaron.” I said just as incoherently but a little bit louder.

“You did what?”

“I kissed Aaron! There, jeez are you happy?”

Their jaws dropped. “You….”

“Kissed….”

“Aaron….?”

I nodded.

“When did this happen!” Angelica practically screamed.

I sighed and rolled my eyes, “It was at the party, and you know Todd, right?”

They all nodded, “The one who’s been in love with you for like ever?”

“Yeah, well, he kind of cornered me and Aaron came along and saved me telling Todd he was my new boy friend and he didn’t believe us, so I had to kiss him.”

“Oh my God.” Maria said, “What was it like? Is he a good kisser?”

I laughed, “I don’t know, it was just…I don’t know, but his lips are really soft….” I said thinking about it again, involuntarily my fingers rose to my lips again.

“Oh jeez, you’re in love.” Iris said.

“Hey, you know what? That’s not cool. We were forced to kiss, okay?” Lie. “It’s not as if I like him or anything.” Lie. “And besides, it’s not like we’d ever get together anyways, he’s too crazy for me.” I wasn’t sure if that was the truth anymore. The more I was around him, the less of a bad guy he became.

Luckily for me I had gotten them to drop the topic after that. And so I finished the day having minimal contact with Aaron. But the next day didn’t go so well.

I did my morning routine as I always did, wash face, brush teeth, kiss Candence goodbye and grab a bottle of water from the fridge then got outside and get on my bike. But I went outside and get on my bike and the back tire was flat. I turned the wheel looking for the culprit and sure enough there was a huge thorn stuck in my tire. I groaned and stood there like a child, pouting with my arms crossed for a moment. Then I sighed. I had no choice. I took my phone out of my backpack and took a deep breath as I dialed a number and put the phone next to my ear.

“Hello?”

“Aaron?”

I heard him groan, “Gwen? What’s up? It’s only like six thirty.” He sounded tired and hoarse; no doubt I’d just woken him up.

“I’m, um, need to ask a favor.”

He yawned, “Yeah, sure, what is it?”

“Can you give me a ride to school?”

Twenty minutes later, I was getting into his car.

“Thanks.” I told him when I got in, he smiled and me and said something, but I didn’t even know what it was, my heart stopped when he smiled at me. Damn it! I hurried up and put my seatbelt on.

“How come you needed a ride?” he asked.

“My bike tires went flat.”

“That sucks.”

“Yes, it most definitely does.”

“How about you just car pool with me for the rest of summer school?”

Every fiber of my body screamed to tell him no if I didn’t want him to know I liked him, but my lips had a different plan. “Sure, that sounds good.”

He grinned, “Alright then carpool buddy.”

I laughed, “Whatever floats your boat.”

We got to school and the second I got out of his car, the guy I recognized as Daniel came running.

“Hey Daniel, what’s up?” Aaron asked, but he ignored him and went straight to me.

“You,” he said, what’s your name again?” his light English accent sounded charming even when he sounded desperate.

“Um, Gwen, why?”

“Your friend Angelica, I’ve been trying to find her for ages, and she’s never anywhere in sight. It’s rather nerve-racking.”

“Why’s that?”

“Because I owe her a date. And I don’t want her to think I don’t want to take her, because I do, I can just never find her.”

“Really? Because she’s right there.” I said satisfied and smiled, pointing over to her walking into school. He grinned and hugged me, “thank you, thank you so much”

“Wow, it sounds like you just saved his life.” Aaron commented. I laughed, “Maybe I just did.”

And then Jacob showed up in front of us as we walked in. “Hey Gwen.” He said shoving his hands in his pockets.

“Hey Jacob, what’s up?”

“I was kind of wondering if you could tell me what Iris thinks of me?”

I laughed, “You can’t tell?”

“Is it bad?” he asked suddenly worried. This time I heard Aaron laugh with me. “No Chump, she’s head over heels for you, go ask her out already.”

His eyes widened and a smile grew on his face, “Thanks Gwen!” and he ran off. and so we started walking towards the school gate again but Taylor showed up.

“Oh jeez, what now?”

“Is this a bad time?” he asked.

“Oh no, It’s jut that all of my friend crushes have been coming up to me this morning asking where they were or if they liked them.”

“Does that mean Maria likes me?”

“Bingo buddy.”

“Yes!” he gave me a hug too, and said, “Thanks Gwen!”

“Okay, do you see anyone else Aaron? If so hide me.”

He laughed, “Sure thing.”

I looked up at him and smiled, maybe something could happen between us?
